  • Shimano became absolute king in 1984. After this absolute tour de force where they pretty much defined the ultimate form of each component, they then went on to make front shifting work properly, invent a brake with enough leverage to lock up the front at any speed, and actually finish the design of the road bike by putting the shifters in the brake levers. Made every decade before the 80s look like backyard bullshit.

Fucking king. They made Campy lift their game so damn hard, and then left such a high target for SRAM to aim for in order to compete.

  • Canyon has the brand new SRAM Red on their website, delivery is early June.
They have a Super Record WRL with Bora WTO bike that’s cheaper the Red or DA.

  • How shit is Shimano ESSA going to be?
A 8 speed 40t ring and 11-45 groupo for under £160 complete sounds pretty good.

  • As it's flat bar, probably perfectly OK and more than any of us really need...

... But saying that, it's double the price and depending on what's being built, SLX 12 speed with 11-51 is £325 and verified not shit..

  • Cheers, although that is a bargain, it’s for a rim brakes bike. For someone with zero mechanical knowledge, so I’m thinking 8 speed would be much more forgiving. Also older 8 speed mtb bits should play nicely with it if needs be.

  • Shimano became absolute king in 1984.

Hard agree. I bought 7400 in '85. Got a lot of sneering from Campag owners.

  • Campagnolo isn’t the problem. Campagnolo snobs are the problem.

  • Wife wants an upgrade for her hybrid alivio triple

Will go 1x but unsure on sram or shimano. Leaning on towards shimano as I have the bleed kit. What is the sweet price/performance spot for a flat bar set up these days?

  • I'd say Deore, but you can do 1x10 Cues and get a 46t cassette for decent range. Depends on the use and prices you can find I guess

  • Campagnolo isn’t the problem. Campagnolo snobs are the problem.

Between the exclusive cost of it (how long has Campy been such poor bang for buck?), and the fact it's Italian, with all that intangible toss of brand identity, the Campy snobs are inevitable, like Ferrari's tifosi. Giocare è a pagamento.

  • i have a hope wheelset with a shimano 11spd cassette on. Do I need a whole new freehub body to use 12 speed axs cassette on it?

  • What ratio? But yeah, probably XDR.

  • Indeed. Assuming it's Road then you'll need an XDR cassette. If you mean AXS Eagle (mtb), them an XD freehub will work too.

  • Yeah road. Guessing I'll need the hope xdr freehub for my pro4s

  • Yup. Ask your local dealer, there's not much in the way of discounts to be found in general.

  • Does anyone know anyone who makes 12spd 110BCD 5 arm 2x chainrings? After 52/36T.

Seems that a lot of places haven't bothered updating their products since 10/11spd. I'm currently running 11spd TA Specialites Syrius chainrings, & they seem fine with 12spd drivechain, but was hoping to find something which explicitly specified 12spd compatibility with new ones. Either that, or am I unnecessarily concerned about running 11spd rings with 12spd? FD shifting has been fine tbh.

Edit: eventually found these from Praxis.

  • I have a rival AXS groupset en route

my current bike has a Wheels MFG T47 Angular Contact Outboard BB 24/22mm in it - does anyone know if this will for the rival chainset? or do I need a new BB (or adaptor)

  • Not sure about the dub fitting, but before you do, Rival AXS chainsets are bonkers heavy, you could probably sell it for something much better at a cost neutral.

  • any suggestions?

    Rival - 844g - £free
    Force 744g - £230
    Red - - 561g - £650

I might get maybe £90 for the rival chainset but that's still another chunk needed to save 100g on force?

  • New BB. GXP and DUB are quite different and unfortunately your existing BB is too narrow (22mm) whereas DUB spindle is 28.99mm.

    SRAM own is about £45.

  • Get an old Red crankset with worn rings for cheap, and throw AXS rings on it - is that doable?

  • hm, i actually have red carbon cranks with a pm spider. 110BCD, 5 bolt. Wonder if can find chainrings that are compatible with SRAM flattop chain

  • Looks like a praxis buzz 50/34 chainrings will work with my 110/5bolt dzero spider/PM, AND is compatible with SRAM 12 speed flattop chain

That will give me gearing of 50/34 up front with 10/36 at the back, which seems a really good range. Now i'm worried the chain included in the groupset won't be long enough or something.

edit: also reading that SRAM AXS employs a 13t gap from little ring to big ring and changing this might cause shifting issues for the FD. Annoying.
