• The odd thing about American men's fashion is that when they want to stand out they do it in a jokey childlike way. The wacky Oakleys, the comedy facial hair, the hilarious t shirt. The message is 'I'm different and interesting'. But they won't convey this with a patterned shirt with buttons. That's for effeminate men and Europeans. I took a proper shirt as my only street shirt on tours in the US. Even in a swish bar in San Francisco I stood out as obviously European. A frenchman was relieved when I walked in.
