  • The Merton Parkas had a Friday residency at the Fountain, New Malden. We went every week, they were great and the keyboard player was exceptional. One time they played upstairs at Ronnie's (Scott). Bruce Foxton and Rick Butler came to see them, which was a thrill for us. And then suddenly, no Jam, no Merton Parkas, Mick Talbot and Paul Weller have jumped ship. Bruce Foxton still doesn't know what happened. At the time I thought that's a sophisticated progression, but you look at something like that and it's really hard to accept it ending. How tight they were, the passion, the anger, the songwriting. Well I suppose everything is just moments in time but I miss that one. Thank you EB, top pick.

That's what I really missed in Weller's solo career (apart from a few tunes during his Coke years) the anger and energy
