Shipping bike to Europe

  • Travel adjacent, more like. I'm likely moving back to Europe, Croatia specifically. I have two bikes that I need to figure out how to send.

Does anyone have experience, first- or second-hand, of shipping bikes with couriers like DHL or Parcelforce? It seems like shipping is less faff than flying with a bike, but is this true?

If flying, there seem to be two schools of thought -- cardboard it up to get some extra padding, or make it more obvious that it's a bike, I've even seen transparent covers used. Any wisdom?

  • I've looked into this as I was considering sending a bike out to a mate of mine's place in Spain for when I visit. Shipping turned out to be just as expensive as me flying out with the bike, but meant I didn't get a holiday. So I think if I'm going to do it, I'll box it up and fly.

I've taken bikes on planes before and I used a massive, hard-shell bike box, which worked well. If I were doing it again, I'd probably just cardboard box it and get extra padding, which would mean I could ditch the cardboard and ride the bike when I arrived.

  • I travel regularly to Zagreb with BA with a bike in an ordinary bike cardboard box I get from local bike shop - it can go as part of luggage so cheap really going one way. Tell them you don't know if returning with it, just don't mention you are leaving it there same for you know who on arrival ;)

Other very reliable option is Vucko Express

  • This is exactly the type of information I was hoping to find, thank you. I'll drop a message to Vucko.
Does flying with BA come out cheaper than Ryanair? Sorry might be tired and daft but what do you mean by not telling them I'm leaving it for whom?

  • Yes as Heathrow is near and bike is same price as a check in suitcase - off season or mid week etc round £150-200 all in

You need to call BA to arrange for bike as it is oversized and when arriving to CRO you are there for a bike race in CRO/SLO/Italia. No import tax 😂 as we are not in EU anymore.

  • I see I see, so the tax is contingent on whether they think you're selling or not. Claro.
