  • Finally got to watch The Martian with Matt Damon. it was okay, but then I thought, what was all the fuss about, it had that tacky global media commentary running throughout, endless ethical questioning, soundtrack choices were meh, okay perhaps it was based of Mission Leaders playlist.

for a Robinson Crusoe meets 2001 space vibe.. 4/10

Scenery and space vehicles were epic though, which Ridley Scott is not stranger to.

It has made me think about watching Gravity and Interstellar again though, for comparison

  • I very nearly watched Gravity again on a flight yesterday. Opted to sleep instead, which was the right call, but think a rewatch at home, with decent sound, is going to happen very soon. My son has a hospital procedure today with a couple of days convalescence off school. Perfect for father and son sci-fi film watching..

  • One of those films that's on my should watch list rather than my want to watch list. Just doesn't look like my cup of tea. That said i thought the same about The Grand Budapest Hotel and enjoyed it when i finally forced myself to watch it.

  • Interstellar

    Noooooo 😂

  • Gravity

Is that the one where Clooney's character essentially tells Bullock's character to "keep her pretty little head/you're doing OK for a girl I guess/just hang on and stop being hysterical" etc?

    Load of wank!

  • Gravity…Load of wank!

One of my all time favourites, 3D in the IMAX, incredible.

  • It would be a dull world if we all liked the same things I guess.....

  • I did say Gravity and Interstellar for comparison 🤣

I think The Martian did carry an ironic sense of doom which Matt Damon was well cast.

and I confess that I do actually like sci-fi movies, but perhaps more so with female leads..

    example Contact with Jodie Foster

  • I didnt love gravity, but fuckin hell it was stressful at the IMAX when I seen it.

  • I enjoyed Gravity at the cinema as it was a real rollercoaster, but I wouldn't bother to watch it on a small screen.

Interstellar is a piece of poo. Close to being an excellent film but it shafts itself in the closing 3rd with all that nonsensical 'love saves everything' woo.

  • this finally played at my local indy. lovely little film for sure. glad you put it in here or I may have missed it

  • Baltic Tribes is intense. The "Free with ads" category in Amazon Prime is mostly dross, but that isn't. I wasn't stoned while watching it but it felt as if I had been.

  • Johnny Mnemonic

Ice-T! Dolph Lundgren! Henry Rollins! Takeshi Kitano! That lady from Starship Troopers! A cyber dolphin! How have I never seen this before?! Thanks for the recommendation, was an excellent watch. I was all primed to say that William Gibson should have sued them for copyright infringement and then his name popped up with a screenwriting credit. High quality 90’s shit.

  • Lol, now you have to watch New Rose Hotel.

  • I thought I'd keep the Francis Ford Coppola ball rolling and watched The Outsiders. Hard to believe it's the same director as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and The Conversation. What a stinker! A handful of great shots peppered in to some really wooden dialogue and performances and general amateurish feel. It was fun seeing Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez and Matt Dillon when they were so young though I suppose.

  • Brassed Off is available on four. It still has the magic.

  • Brassed Off

Watched it on a flight, posted on Twitter. Mark Herman commented "was I on a 30 year old aircraft"
    I was made up

  • Watched As Bestas (The Beasts) the other night, and I'd highly recommend it. Had us on the edge of our seat the whole time. Which, considering it is about neighbours in a tiny Galician pueblo, is quite something.

  • Is Letterboxd playing up for anyone else at the moment?

  • Watched 'sometimes I think about dying' and hotel royal yesterday, first film was quite dull, if well made, second had a bit more going on, decent acting for the pair.

  • I think it was made the same year as another S E. Hinton adaption.
It does not compare well to Rumble Fish.

  • I loved it at the time, have been meaning to rewatch it (and Rumblefish!). Regular double bill for me and my mates as young 'uns.

  • ...And Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, C Thomas Howell... Crazy amount of 'stars' in it. Plus Tom Cruise was still 'pre major dental work'. 😁
Not forgetting the Stevie Wonder title track!

  • I'm showing Rumble Fish as the season finale on the 21st December. Just saying...
