this got me thinking that outside of electoral politics there’s very rarely single issues, or to put it another way, it is sad that in electoral politics - with its apparent need to appeal to people with a menu of popular policies- single issues can emerge like this. outside of electoral politics the US civil rights movement needed the communist party’s support at a time it could have legitimately said it represented the US proletariat; modern disability studies relies heavily on alignment with gay rights activism and queer theory; environmentalism and indigenous rights; BLM and the movement to boycott and divest from companies supporting Israeli apartheid, all these have become deeply connected. Then big parties swoop down and say ‘we like you but your friend is too risky’. However, these forms of solidarity do mean that if one of your friends has an influence a wider culture of acceptance has a greater chance of developing. Or, put it another way, I’d rather be before a liberal judge for my perceived crimes than a conservative one, even if the laws are the same.
I mind... at least, a lot of people know, I'm not keeping it private... but this thread is not a safe space to disclose some things, so I won't put the reply into this thread.
