A new SLR will be what, £1,500? And then extra lenses at £500+ each. You could get a 90s Canon SLR body and 50mm lens for well under £200 and just buy a new body if it breaks for £50.
I think this will have a much broader appeal, they can justify the project and then move on to full frame / SLR / medium format.
West Yorkshire cameras had 10 in stock, looks like they've sold 8 overnight.

Pentax 17 35mm Half-frame Officially Announced
..to be honest I'm not overly enthusiastic about this camera (I do hope both the SLR as well as the new compact camera they spoke about in the past are still coming out some time in the future as well), but of course it's great that a company is developing and producing new film cameras in this day and age in the first place, so kudos to them!
It's definitely not for me though - really don't care about half frame, I think it's ugly as hell, and also £499 is just insane, I mean you could get one of the premium compacts in mint condition plus a dozen rolls of film for that money, really wondering who's gonna buy this thing to be frank 🤷
