He has milled the cranks down from 175 mm to 153 mm. cheaper cranks means more material left.

Cool http://bikesmithdesign.com/ has been doing that also for decades.
The crank on the orange bike is an interesting choice. They went all out on every piece of the frameset and selected nice components everywhere else, then installed a perfectly functional, but very cheap crank. I like it in a way, but seems a bit out of place.
