  • I appreciate this is one of the more stupid questions asked here but…

If I were to buy a TV, what would I need to get all the standard channels/freeview on it? Some sort of box attached to the internet? I’ve not owned a telly in 15+ years, back in the day you had that cable which was attached to your aerial but they don’t use them any more. Do they just need an internet connection?

  • Depends on the TV I think, ours is not a smart TV so it plugs into the old school aerial and gets all the Freeview channels

  • Ours connects to wifi and gets all channels that way I'm fairly sure. No separate box or aerial cable, certainly.

  • A new smart tv should let you put all the apps on. I think freeview should be installed.

The "40k kitchen way" probably involves an apple tv/something more bespoke.

  • as others have said, they all seem to just do it as standard now. ours is hooked up to the sky thingy but thats it.

we recently bought a new one after 15ish years, and the most infuriating bit was discovering that anything decent is minimum 40" aka too fucking big.

  • The easy option (if you have one) is still just to plug it into an aerial and the tv will have a tuner to give you all the freeview channels.

Virtually all new tvs will also have apps which you can use for watching live tv but you'll be split across different apps for different channels so it's not really great for channel hopping.

  • Having ditched Virgin a few months ago and not having an aerial, this is an occasional annoyance. iPlayer is great - particularly with the UHD stuff - but other channel's apps are crap in comparison. Also the hassle of requiring different accounts for them all.

However I've just discovered something new called Freely. Can't figure out if this is something that will only be on new TVs, or whether it'll be made available as an app on existing ones.

  • If I were to buy a TV, what would I need to get all the standard channels/freeview on it?

I'm a basic bitch TV kinda guy. Basic TVs have Freeview or Freesat built in now. You just connect the aerial up like in the old days and they auto-tune the channels.

If you want to add YouTube, iPlayer etc, it's probably easiest to stick a Chromecast in the back and use your phone to control it. I've never found smart TVs with the apps built in very easy to use in comparison.

  • Is there a way I can see the 2014 version of this when it still had content?

  • For regular TV over the Internet without having to switch apps for different broadcasters you might want to look at Freely. Same people behind it as Freeview/Freesat so BBC, ITV etc.

It's only just launched so only Bush and Hisense right now. It's likely to come to lots of other brands soon.

  • Cheers all. Looks like it’s probably within my capabilities to sort out.

Any TV with a YouTube app I've come across has been happy to link to my phone or tablet for control. Also most seem to have a USB port which let's you use a driverless USB keyboard, which solves the main issue of trying to type on an on-screen keyboard with a laggy cursor

  • Yes! The Bypass Paywalls Clean extension is remarkable. All the things I couldn't read with Archive are suddenly available. You don't even have to click anything, it works automatically in the background as if there was no paywall.

  • Since sliders came in, do Brazilians still wear havaiana flip flops?

  • Yes, your feet get muggy and sweaty in rubber sliders, and they rub worse if you get sand in them.

  • I didn't think Brazilians did, just people on their gap years?

  • Yeah just do it on a day with no wind?!

  • When I was there it was like the fucking law or something. Both girls I went out with gunned me for my Tevas. Unless you wore a suit you wore flip-flops, either Havaiana or this other Brasilian brand with flags. Nationalism is definitely strong there, they love flag. Even Belfast can't touch them on the flags.

  • Woo!

  • Dull question. Where can I get a pack of 10 or so short, domed M5 allen or torx bolts that aren't made of cheese? To fill a few holes on a new (to me) frame. I had a look at Orbital fasteners but they're all a bit long.
