Broadband Internet & ISP Recommendations?

  • This was installed on a warehouse refurb. They weren't keen on sticking it outside, so they have the massive aerial on the window sill. The speed was up to 7mbps download which was a 700% increase.

    Coat quite a bit though!

11dbi aerial and it is about the size of half a box of A4 paper reams

  • "up to" 7Mb? They out of sight of any aerials or something? I get anywhere from 150-250Mb down when I've checked.

  • Awk well got my bank statement into to have been charged 1039 for the quarter from BT, to say I burst a blood vessel was an understatement.

Absolutle shower of useless lying cunts.

  • Openreach here.... Obviously should have realised it comes in on the telegraph pole at the back of the house and not the front like Virgin so have had to quickly rethink cabling and where to put Router. He wanted to put it in the office at the back of the house but I didn't really want it there (mainly because it's got tons of gear in it at the moment as am prepping cameras for shoots) so it's going downstairs in living room at the near side of the side return. Prob a good location for signal but it's going to need be properly thought out in terms of boxing it in and patch panels etc. He seems very reluctant and wanted to drill through the window frame so I had to literally get my own SDS out and say I'd do it myself if it helped..

  • All done, drilled the hole myself in the end but he did a fairly tidy job outside on the roof of the side return. With some help from forum IT admin @spotter I now have mesh up and running with a 7530ax and 2 x 1200ax boxes from AVM. Might get a third box, maybe a fourth if we ever do the attic.

Not wired in yet as I'll need to re-plan/think passage of cables from the unexpected router position. So currently getting between 150 and 600 down depending where I am and on what device, and 100 up everywhere (which almost makes me think that there's something wrongly configured on the computer getting 150 down, but it's still over double what Virgin were regularly giving me and for about 50% less cost).

  • posting from the gigabit valhalla. cityfibre install was seamless. plusnet cancelled easy peasy. initial speed test gave 600mbps - need to check what’s required to achieve the contracted 900mbps down. not sure whether you get contention during daytime. think it might take 24 hours to get the full speed

  • think it might take 24 hours to get the full speed

This is what we were told by the engineer yesterday (though only an openreach povo here).

Fwiw my mesh def doesn't appear set up correctly - I think I may want 'cascading' instead as, in terms of distance/layout, I have ONT > router > then in the next room wirelessly a 1200 AX (which was set up next to the 7530ax and moved into the next room to an 'ideal spot' (according to the AVM app), then in the next room on from that another 1200ax configured in the same way (i.e. twinned with the router, but I think I want to twin it with the first repeater as am getting like 1-2mb wireless download which is nuts. Hoping to hardwire it all tomorrow anyway but slightly annoying as have had to plug back into virgin powerline today while I download half a terabyte of footage.

  • I think I may want 'cascading' instead

Yeah this should help until you can set it up wired, but also consider power lines maybe

  • Too busy fucking up my house for that.

  • At least you now have the bandwidth to livestream the removal of a supporting wall and subsequent collapse

  • Absolutely correct. Have started from the top and done the office, but now need to feed those two cables down stairs. If it was a simple flight that's one thing but there are all sorts of weird up and down half steps around the landing and it's all lath and plaster underneath the main boards. No one talk to me about powerline (which I already have sitting unused).

  • Moment of truth...

  • Using a different home mesh system now, so have 6x eero to get rid of.

Any interest here for a favourable price before I try ebay?

  • Which versions are they, possibly interested. Are they ISP tagged at all?

  • They’re all J010001- how do I find out about ISP tag?

  • Im pretty sure they were all purchased independently from the internet provider - so shouldn’t be ISP tagged - Im selling on behalf of my parents so will double check.

  • Cool, thanks. J010001 isn’t bringing up much. Know if they are eero 5, 6, 6pro? Think it has it on the back/underside of the unit to get a photo.

Edit: unless there just extender units and not the router APs a-la eero 6

  • Does this help?

  • Perfect yeah that does. Looks like it’s the Gen2 Eero from the eero help docs, not quite what I was looking for. Thanks for all the info, hopefully someone takes them :)

  • Thanks and no worries :-)

  • Fucking Talktalk's online portal - what the fuck do I do here?!

Have tried on my phone and 2 different browsers on my computer. Absolutely shit system.

  • Fucking Talktalk

    Yep.

Can't believe anyone still uses them.

  • Got transferred to them from Shell...I think I might just pay the ~£130 early exit fees.

  • Seeing the above reminds me of trying to log into Virgin.

Been a couple of weeks so I'll just sing the praises of Zen and their fritz!box stuff. All working flawlessly. Has been connected non stop since the 15th, no drops, no slowdowns - typically getting max speeds (1gb down, 120mb up) etc. And logging into the fritz control app is amazing - immediate visual clues on what's connected, over what, at what speed with the ability to stop it or steer it elsewhere. Just amazing in comparison. And for 50% less than virgin who offered inconsistent connections, price increases every quarter, and speeds a quarter of what I'm getting now at best - all locked in price for the duration of contract (I'd renew immediately for 10 years if I could but they seemingly only do 24 months at a time).

Might get a zen tattoo on my face tbh.
