  • Na come on, it's a bit like sleeping in toilets while doing long distance, no?

Actually I like the 9000 here 9000 there idea.
Was thinking earlier if 3600 laps of Tempelhof would count. It's something like 5k to go around once.

  • Wouldn't break any record, but it's a nice thought that going around our local cycling training park 10 times a day would be like riding around the planet somehow.

  • Was it a good read?

  • Yeah, but I only tend to do that once or twice and usually not by choice.

Thingiebobs set (one of) the 24hr records at Tempelhof

  • I have it on Kindle so read it over a while on my phone when on trains. I guess it was interesting enough (it's 10 years ago so there's a new version on Amazon with pics or something). It details some of her other events (Lake Baikal sounds mad). The ride goes pretty much as you'd expect though so it's not like there's any suspense or anything and other than a bunch of knee pain the actual record ride seemed to go very well (she did a lot of smart planning and testing in advance) so if you want near death drama tales it's not for you. I always enjoy quirky record setting though so this and things like Sarah Outen's ocean rowing stuff I find interesting.

  • Thanks, added it to my ever growing list of books to read!

  • Yeah, I buy them faster than I can read them.

  • Ignoring the price, these look interesting, with the extended areas on the sides near the hoods

Anyone used these or anything similar before? The Mason has worn bar tape all around that area as I tend to favour it.

  • You could try the Redshift cruise control grips on your current bars to see if you like the larger
    platform.

  • Thanks. Definitely a cheaper option. Not sure how I missed these "tops" extenders.

  • I've got these. They are nice.

    Gravel or road version?

  • They gave them to me when I was a somebody. Gravel.

I think what I like is then being carbon, is really does take out buzz and flex, in a way aluminium doesn't.

  • I was just going to replace my bar tape... now I'm going to spend £400 on bars...

  • Clif bars? That's about 5 of them. Won't last long.

  • One (probably last) question about bike setup. I’m only doing 500km with 40h to do it so I’ll have a kip somewhere as well as daytime stops where I speak the language so can ask for a socket to plug into. Still worth doing the dynamo or just a battery and a plug in charger?

  • battery for that

  • If you already have a dynamo installed, why would you remove it?
If you don't already have a dynamo installed and have batteries that will last the duration, why install it?
Ask yourself, do you feel lucky punk? Well do ya?

  • I wouldn't be faffing around charging for that length of event, just take a battery that will give you what you need and don't bother taking a charger.

I would never charge during the day at a cafe or whatever unless I was basically touring.

  • I would still take a charger because if you lose your battery or it fucks out, for the sake of 100 grams or whatever, you have a backup.

  • I'd take 2 smaller batteries rather than a charger. This is shorter than a 600km audax. I have never thought of taking a charger on one of those.

In 10 years of doing long rides with batteries I've never had one fuck up on me either, and I've not lost one - yet!

  • You can get through a 600k without taking either, but I pack for likelihood of event completion not weight savings.

  • Sunday is the start of the Taunus Bikepacking event, organised by Jesko von Werthern (TCR veteran). 1000km/17000vm mixed terrain in the Taunus region. I'm cap 75, trackers here: https://www.followmychallenge.com/live/taunusbikepacking/

  • @skinny 's https://www.lesperitdelbikepacking.org/el-piri-live starts tomorrow morning too.

    We're riding #partypace

  • Sure, it's not about weight saving though, it's simplifying by eliminating a task, which saves time and means one less thing to think about.

I'd rather take an extra battery than a charger, even though it will weigh more, it will be quicker to use if I need it, and much more flexible
