I was there for the first time this year and had a mixed experience. There seemed to be a fair few riders taking it oh so very seriously, but I guess you get that everywhere. Good atmosphere at several points points on the route, a lot of fun cycling on A-roads, and had a few chats with other riders (inclusing someone off here whose username I didn't catch!). I managed to throw myself around in sub-six hours on my single speed, which was pretty much exactly my goal-time.
