• In general for threads you want an engagement length as a multiple of the bolt diameter to give appropriate engagement while also not wasting material or making the joint so strong you can strip the threads.

    Steel would be starting at 1x.
    For Alu 2x.

    When I work to these rules of thumb at work the mechanical engineers tend to be pretty happy as a starting point. (For the thread pitches I work to)

  • That's either bad spec by Mason, or your hub OLN is wider than it should be. As we're talking bike engineering, you will never reach the ideals that Grumpy Git is talking about but 5mm engagement on a 12mm axle is not a lot.
