I have to confess I haven't ridden much on fixed recently, but a Veteran-Cycle club invitation to a fixed wheel ride made me get this bike down from the loft, and I must say I'm glad I did.
The ride was a fairly modest 30 miles on a loop to the east and north of Stevenage, all on quiet lanes, but including a fair amount of climbing. As an old person there's always the question: can I still climb on a single gear? The answer, yesterday at any rate, was yes, although today my quadriceps are stiff - when I got home I was too busy to massage and that was the result. Old folks need a lot of maintenance to function more or less like middle aged people!
The Bike
The frame is a lugless Gillott, I believe, dating from 1951. Probably intended for a single gear, it was heavily modified as a geared road bike in the eighties. I've ignored the mods and gone back to fixed. Although this bike may look like an old clubman's winter fixed hack, that would be a misjudgement because its got excellent 28 spoke wheels with light veloflex tyres, so even with me on it, it's not slow.
