I wondered when he would emerge into US national politics.

The Trump fanatics who wrap themselves in the flag and wear the t-shirts and hats and go to the rallies and will never be swayed by facts are easy to mock and to marvel at, even to pity. But there's another class of supporter that is far, far worse, utterly cynical and self-serving, amoral and deserving of no compassion at all.
