Ah maybe it's not that dirty then. Maybe they try to avoid stitching a child as it's painful. Having had a fair number of staples and stitches it isn't nice.

My knees were raw or scabbed for about 99% of my childhood. I doubt my dad even noticed half the time.

You don't want to sew dirty wounds up as they need to be open to push dirty out and clean. Better to be able to clean it.
