Bit of a stall tbh - got diagnosed with hip bursitis and that whole area is a bit sore as well as my shoulder. Can lift a dumbbell OK but at this point I can’t be bothered risking anything…

Interesting/shocking read in the Guardian about the prevalence of steroids in the yoof of today. I try to use social media with a sceptical mind but the constant bombardment of jacked up twenty-somethings is relentless. Luckily the expectations of a middle age man are slightly more realistic!

I read that. Really interesting article. I see so many kids in my local gym and they’re all super jacked. By kids I mean teenagers. Not so many in their 20/30s.
People see people on steroids on social media and they think I want to look like that. They find the steroid guy in their gym and away they go.

Dr Israetel is great. He is really blunt about steroids and has a few videos about them. He says yeah I used them but now I’m paying the price.
Back in Arnold’s era nobody thought they were unsafe. Everyone thought about them the way people use pre workout now.
Two guys I worked with in the 90s were juiced and it ruined their health. We had a guy die two years ago from side effects. He went nuts and was certain everyone was watching him.
Maybe there will be massive health problems down the road with so many people using steroids. -

I think one of the other things that makes them more accessible to people now is the plethora of information about them out there. YouTube, forums, etc, telling you what to take and what other stuff to do, when to get your bloods done, what to look out for etc. Back in the day if you hopped on you just asked the big guy at the gym what to do and did that, so it's no surprise a lot of people are suffering from the consequences of the compounds they took when they were doing it under not the greatest advice.

Bearing in mind steroids are considered toxic, that tells you everything you need to know.
We have a pt at our gym and he’s massively juiced up. But… he’s very smart with it.

Seems like people aren't bothered about the long term now as long as they look sick for the short.
Mental.

Get that summer rig or tiktok clout tho

Also super prevalent in bjj and UFC... Sad to see teenagers who haven't even maxed their natural yet smashing them.
But each to their own...

in the Guardian
sometimes wears women’s trousers, to better accommodate the steep slope between his trim waist and bulging thighs.
Hmmmm not sure this isn't sensationalism at best... Not sure you'd see a bodybuilder admit to wearing woman's clothes unless that just another kink.

A lot are pretty open about their gay4pay stories so I wouldn't be surprised if they'd admitted to something relatively tame like this. If anything, hearing about it first in a Guardian article is probably a sign it's a one-off guy's approach rather than a known bodybuilder life hack. But then maybe I'm completely out of the loop.

plethora of information
For a given value of "information" that neglects the negative impact.
Beach muscles tho.
-
• #5741
No. Many sites openly discuss the negative effects.

I'd be interested in the sources you're talking about as it does not align with things I've read/watched related to gear usage from reputable sources.
-
• #5743
I'm being pretty flippant, to be honest.
What counts as a reputable source in this context though?
The NHS article might focus in the downsides of use and lack of evidence in common methods employed for reducing side effects, but I don't get the sense that kids are reading that.

Yeah, there is huge risks of conformation bias going on when people are out there looking for information on steroids. A lot of it is just the slick, modern day social media version of asking the biggest guy at the gym. Except 'the biggest guy ' is now an influencer who is slick and incentivised keep the ball rolling as there is big money in it.
Proper medical sites will rarely say 'one 4 week cycle will build a mass that you will retain some of throughout your life and be unlikely to have long term adverse effects' even if it is true. *I don't know if this is true.

I've been having itband pain which is preventing me from running. As I usually run 60-70km it's a bit of a pita. Instead of being annoyed I am using it as an opportunity to get better at rowing and the ski erg. I'm following the beginner Pete Plan for rowing and a garageathlete plan for the ski erg. I'm also doing some shorter runs on the treadmill just to keep me ticking over. This means I'm still getting the 60km or so in each week just spread across the three. I've set myself the challenge of trying to complete 5km in each in sub 1hr combined which I'm also enjoying as a goal. Also following this strength routine https://rowingstronger.com/2015/07/17/the-basics-of-strength-training-for-rowing/ which has me doing a few exercises I wouldn't otherwise.

I think if people want to get good balanced information about gear usage there are a decent amount of places out there you can find e.g. moreplatesmoredates, none of which have I ever seen actively advise people to take gear but do say "if you are going to do it this is what you should do" and caveat it with side effects, similar to safer usage advice for any other drug.

I wouldn't say it's fun but it's as close as I can get to it.
Thanks!
