  • Best way to be.

  • Ooh... what's all this then?

She/somebody she knows has built it up, then realised hydraulic brakes are an absolute pain in the arse. She's en route to either a) a shop to sort it, or b) throw all the GRX stuff in the bin and get cable disc calipers

  • Any recommendations on low-cost 'casual' shorts with chamois/padding? Alternatively, padded underwear.

I think the “low-cost” bit needs addressing.

In more than two decades of searching I’ve yet to find anything ‘casual’ - from £10 supermarket jeans to Endura and Mavic chinos and Rapha jeans - that lasts very long once you start pedalling in it. I have however got a pair of Endura humvee 3/4s that are into their second decade of use and are showing little signs of it beyond a couple bits of worn out (non structural) stitching.

At full rrp Humvees are on the rich side of what I like to spend on clothing but I’ve two pairs of 3/4, 2 pairs of shorts and a pair of trousers and don’t think I’ve ever paid full price. Spread the cost over the length of time they last and they are pretty hard to beat.

For padding/chamois, I just wear the bib shorts I have already bought for wearing on their own. Some of the bib shorts probably poke out the bottom of the Humvee shorts but, so what?

It sends like sometimes Humvees come with liner shorts and they can be alright but if I’m riding far enough that I’d want anything other than regular boxers, I’ll just chuck on bibs and be really comfy.

  • then realised hydraulic brakes are an absolute pain in the arse

    Babes, you're very, very wrong.

  • Are you American?

  • Wait a second is it only just rolling now??
You had yours a fair bit before me and I’ve been riding it for some time.
    What gives?

  • Yeah "knicks" are cycling shorts. Mostly shorts, sometimes I wear bib knicks.

    https://www.cyclingweekly.com/group-tests/cycling-bib-shorts-buyers-guide-137253

My Humvee reach near my knees and all my cycling shorts are above knee. So you must be wearing much shorter shorts if you can see your knicks? Does it matter if they show? You can also get 3/4 length Humvee which are obviously longer.

The bib showing is purely aesthetic and not really an issue. The 'slipping' is a bigger PITA and requires the use of an elasticated belt done up pretty tight, especially when walking around with stuff in pockets.

Bibs would be perfect if there was a way of attaching to the main shorts at the waist - feel like I've seen this from Patagonia or somebody in the past, but spendy.

  • I think the “low-cost” bit needs addressing.

Sorry, I should have said 'good value'!

  • Babes, you're very, very wrong.

    Apologies, was just bait

  • I have just bought a 2020 CdF Ti frameset, anybody with experience of tyre clearance on it? My gravel wheelset has 25 mm inner width rims, would 42 mm Pathfinder Pros fit with any clearance in case of mud? I have read that on such a rim they measure 44 mm.

  • i think you'd be lucky to get a 700x40 in there tbh

  • My 2016 CdF fits 40mm max, don't know if it's changed much.

  • Other than the rim brake bikes I already own, I will only use hydro discs. Everything else is pish.

  • It's complicated. I took a long time to buy the Di2 stuff because I'm tight and wanted it cheaper so I waited and got a deal. Then I had to find time to see TBW when neither of us were away because I wanted to kill a few birds with one stone - pick up the Di2ified Crux, Mason fit adjustment and sort a couple of pairs of midfoot shoes.

  • Ha interesting I’m struggling to get there too at the moment.

  • For a particular issue, new bike or tweak?

It was just like the old days...

  • Anyone run road tyres on a 24mm internal (G540 or similar) gravel rim?

Just had a silly idea to try the 38mm Pathfinders off the Crux on the Mason. I'm pretty sure 35mm was max clearance though so perhaps 35mm road tyres would work on the G540s?

  • Road wheels are 25 internal now. It’s fine. I run 30s on mine.

  • I run 25mm tyres on my 21mm internal width rims and I don’t think I’m dead yet?

  • Remember that Chaley guy? Man I miss him. Anyone know what happened to him?

  • Crux rear wheel on the Mason. 38mm Pathfinders.

Won't work (too close to chainstay and FD) but I reckon a 38mm slick might actually just fit using these wheels.

  • Is that 25 mm rim? Can you measure width of 38 mm Pathfinders on it? I believe oversized 42s will be too much for CdF but these coulde be perfect.

  • cdfs are very much 35/38mm tyre frames if you want a bit of tyre clearance depending on conditions.
I had 38mm gravelkings on my 2015 one a time but mostly 35s for all year riding.

  • It's a DT Swiss G540, which is 24mm internal (https://www.lfgss.com/comments/17411022/)

Measures 37.3mm with my verniers at an unknown pressure.

I've also got 38C (40mm) Terreno Dry on a set of G540 that I bought from @M4xime yesterday and since my verniers are out, they come up at 41.4mm

It looks like the widest part on both of these tyres is the sidewall, rather than the side knobs, so whether or not they will fit a bike will depend on exactly where the tyre clearance flats/bends are. I'd probably stick with 35mm on the Mason Resolution and only in dry weather.

The Sendero 650x47s come up just over 47mm on MasonxHunt rims.

Anyone got a 38mm GK slick they want rid of? Would be interested to test this in the Mason
