  • Amazing, thank you

  • I need to replace the sink in our bathroom vanity unit as it is damaged. Is there any hope of finding a replacement that will fit the existing vanity?

  • Is all privacy film for windows much of a muchness? We're after, I'd guess, some reeded type effect for a hallway window to minimise how often/how clearly we have to a schlong smushed against a window it overlooks.

Surfacedesigns is quoting about 75 quid for a 76 x 200cm run inc delivery which seems on the steep side for a single window given it probably costs about 5 quid to manufacture.

  • is this what you're after or is it something different? they have 75 x 200 or 90 x 200.

  • After my great carport to garage conversion (still in progress) is finished, I will move onto insulating under the floors.

I will be following the https://www.ecologicalbuildingsystems.com/ guide for suspended floors. I’ve ordered the not inconsiderable insulation/tapes/membranes from them also.

I’ll be taking up the floorboards, cleaning all the debris they left from the 1960’s and then insulating and reinstalling the boards in two rooms.

My question is, would I be crazy to plain the boards (they are slightly cupped) while they are up? Rather than sand them in place afterwards (dust!) They are painted, which is wearing off after dogs/kids/adults.

The boards will need a-bit of tlc, as I’ll need to cut the tongue off when removing them. Then OSMO etc

    Hive consensus please.

Disclaimer: I’d like to buy an electric planer.

  • Honestly I wouldn't touch them if there are no long term durability concerns, just let them age.

  • I've given screwing, gluing, wetting* and pressing a go.

We shall see where we end up.

    *Washing with oxygenated bleach.

  • Planing could turn into a huge job. It would be somewhat dependent on how the boards are going to be used afterwards. A large sander would level the floor.
Just buy an electric plane - very handy to have. I got a cheap one at B+Q ages ago - gets a little use but one of those things that you need to have - just in case.

  • Planer thicknesses are a fun garage tool

  • Has anyone returned/exchanged things under warranty at Toolstation?

Got a little electric screwdriver before Christmas. It stopped working pretty soon but I was too busy/lazy to take it back. Website shows 1 year warranty. Finally took it back this week and had to revisit when a manager was there, he tried to process it but apparently after 6 months their computer says no and I have to contact B&D directly to claim on the warranty (annoyingly it's been 6 mo 2 days but there we go).

I can't imagine it'll be worth sending a £20 budget tool back to B&D but I'd probably rather do that than have a non-functioning piece of junk.

Is this correct? The warranty is with the manufacturer not the retailer?

  • I would think that unless you either have a clever way of making sure you get the same thickness with the hand planer, or buy one like in the picture, you'd end up with different heights and would have to sand anyway?
We have way wider and really warped floorboards, if it was my place and I'd renovate and want to reuse them I'd go for one of those:

  • This gate in my garden has seen better days and I'm thinking I'm going to try and spruce it up on Friday, but I'm mostly clueless.
My current plan is - sand it, repaint it (something like this?, do my best to clean up the hardware - maybe also paint that?

Does anyone have any tips? Am I better off trying to sort it in-situ or take it down?

  • Your contract is always with the retailer and it’s up to them to fix the problem, either with a refund or replacement or organising a repair. They’re breaching the Consumer Rights Act by fobbing you off onto the manufacturer.

  • I was always under the impression after the first month it was onto the maker to fix it!

  • Six months usually under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

  • Ah, that's probably why their computer said no after 6 mo then.

  • I took an 11 month old fucked (I mean completely ragged, I DID NOT look after that thing) RO sander back to Toolstation in Norbury, caked in plaster dust and with only my digital receipt in my account/app. Swapped it out for new with zero questions. Likely branch dependent.

  • It's never up to the maker to fix it. Your relationship is always with the retailer. After six months you need to be able to demonstrate it was faulty when you bought it, which makes things harder.

    https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/what-do-i-do-if-i-have-a-faulty-product-aTTEK2g0YuEy

Though given the only way to assert these rights is to make a fuss in the shop until they give in to make you go away, the letter of the law is not particularly important.

  • Depends how long you want it to last.

Personally I would take it down and put it on trestle tables. 2 reasons: 1. Flat surface will full access makes sanding, and painting to the edges easier. 2. The bottom looks a bit ragged, so if you're going to the effort of painting I'd inject and cover the bottom liberally with wood hardener.

If you don't have an electric sander get one. I bought the ebauer in from screwfix and am happy with it.

  • Thanks for the floorboard feedback. Thickness planer it is! I’ll report back, summer job.
