  • the tory press were lined up ahead of time to splash with the 2000 thing - Starmer's performance wouldn't have altered that.

  • ^ 100% this

But the performance is also a concern going into the next one(s). However much the fuss in today's headlines, this first one will probably be forgotten about come a month's time though - especially when the usual suspects can't lean on the fabricated 2k anymore and they want the now obvious "Sunak is a liar" riposte to go away also.

  • But the performance is also a concern going into the next one(s).

I don't think many people who watched this will tune in for the second debate. The viewing figures were down 3 million on 2019 too. Labour will need to be more aggressive to set the agenda after the next debate though.

Interesting polling from The Sun though:

A JLP survey for The Sun newspaper found 53% of respondents thought the Labour leader performed better in the televised clash, compared with 33% who preferred the Conservative Prime Minister and 13% who did not know.

Among those who voted Tory at the 2019 General Election, 60% said Mr Sunak performed better, compared with 33% who opted for Sir Keir.

A different pollster, Savanta, found Sir Keir beat Mr Sunak by 44% to 39%.

  • Fair enough - and that even the S*n is quoting that is encouraging. The press, as ever, will pick and choose their polls.

FWIW, I thought Sunak came across as a sneery cunt. But I thought Starmer was too easily put off his stride, at the start at least. It was a terrible piece of TV though.

  • I see labour falling into the same traps as before in modern politics.

“The truth will set you free”

It will after the election has been won on lies and by the next one the populist with the attention span of a fucking cocaine fuelled fruit fly will have forgotten and we will be back exactly here again.

  • Didn't they go with muting the microphones in one of the US debates? Would certainly have improved it.

  • When has he not come across as a sneery condescending cunt?

  • If only Kier had shot back with this.

  • something good? link not working

  • Chop off all the crap from /mediaViewer onwards and it works.

  • When I am asleep and my subconscious screens out his existence.

    Erm, that's it.

  • Come on guys, I'm at work and that shit site is blocked.

  • Basically this in video form (but starting with "they lied to you then").

  • I do think they layed a trap.

A fraction of the electorate watched the debates (5m, most of whom will have made their mind up).

More about what you can clip to social media isn't it, and what you can spin into the wider news cycle?

  • The Treasury have confirmed that the £2000 tax figure is false.

  • If there was any sense the next debate should have an agreement between the sensible parties of no shouting, no talking across, be personable and really make sunak and farage look like cunts.

Bonus points if they insist on mics being cut if it's not your turn to talk

  • Literally any of the political news casters could have destroyed either Rishi or Kier last night in a debate by being
    a) well prepared
    b) not a bit useless
    c) displaying some conviction

They are total dog shit at this debating stuff, which seems problematic, considering the way we choose based on their ability to debate stuff.

  • Will the next debate be after the manifestos have been published? The whole thing seems pointless without that being something to discuss.

  • I knew some of this already, but a new report today says most teachers in primary schools are spending their own money to help subsidise schools or to help children with food and clothing.

"A quarter of primary schoolteachers said they had spent more than £100 over the past academic year, while almost one in five (19%) said they were specifically buying either clothing or food."

    https://www.theguardian.com/education/article/2024/jun/05/eight-in-10-primary-teachers-in-england-spending-own-money-to-help-pupils

At the end of the article, a Tory spokesman saying that free school meals have expanded under their government which a) massively misunderstands the root of the problem is that these kids are hungry in the first place and b) a huge chunk of that increase has come in London, a Mayor Khan policy that was fought against tooth and nail by Susan Hall, the Tory candidate.

  • Think I just saw Rayner and Mordaunt are in Friday's debate.

  • Heartbreaking. All of it is utterly awful. But it's the stories about teachers providing food that really hit. Disgraceful attempt at spinning it too, as you say.

  • Debating is pointless when everyone votes along party lines with the odd bit of quidproquo arranged beforehand.

Get rid of the buildings and just arrange for some sort of online voting system

  • Now we are talking.
