• I feel like this has been covered but struggling to find definitive answers using the search function.

Any recommendations on low-cost 'casual' shorts with chamois/padding? Alternatively, padded underwear.

  • I just wear Endura Humvee over whatever old knicks I've got. There are definitely padded shorts/undies available but not used them myself and I don't really like the padded inners in most MTB shorts.

I think the “low-cost” bit needs addressing.

In more than two decades of searching I’ve yet to find anything ‘casual’ - from £10 supermarket jeans to Endura and Mavic chinos and Rapha jeans - that lasts very long once you start pedalling in it. I have however got a pair of Endura humvee 3/4s that are into their second decade of use and are showing little signs of it beyond a couple bits of worn out (non structural) stitching.

At full rrp Humvees are on the rich side of what I like to spend on clothing but I’ve two pairs of 3/4, 2 pairs of shorts and a pair of trousers and don’t think I’ve ever paid full price. Spread the cost over the length of time they last and they are pretty hard to beat.

For padding/chamois, I just wear the bib shorts I have already bought for wearing on their own. Some of the bib shorts probably poke out the bottom of the Humvee shorts but, so what?

It sends like sometimes Humvees come with liner shorts and they can be alright but if I’m riding far enough that I’d want anything other than regular boxers, I’ll just chuck on bibs and be really comfy.

  • Decathlon Quecha MH100 are soft, stretchy, zipped pocket on the thig and bum, regular pockets on the hips. They stay put and are incredibly fast drying. I wear them over old threadbare bibs and they're great. About £15-20 (price goes down a but at the end of the year).
