I will be headed to the lake district with my partner who bike commutes but is not nearly as enthusiastic with cycling as I might be. We will be based in Windermere without a car and would like to get around and about to get to things - we have in mind particularly cycling to Coniston, which Google maps suggests involves a total of 150m of climbing over 17k, which seems eminently doable! Would bringing bikes be a good idea? Suggestions for places with nice walks within biking distance would be much welcome, bonus points if rock climbing can somehow be shoved in!
For those more familiar with cycling around the more popular areas in the lakes - last I remembered being there, the road (A591 I believe) was full at cars going full-on 40mph; do people generally feel safe cycling around the touristy parts of the lakes or is it a bit of a wild west?
