  • GR221 in majorca is good and easy access from public transport

  • @chiroshi good shout on the Jura hike, not too far from my family in Basel. I'd love to do the GR20 some day but I think for a short trip it's maybe a bit much.

@cgg thanks for the GR91 suggestion, that looks ideal and I could pop in to see my friend in Paris at either end of the journey. Pictures look lovely!

@greentricky this also looks great, thank you!

  • Inadvertently did a remake of North by Northwest during landing the other day 😅

(the parallax makes it look like much worse than it actually was)

  • Off to Bulgaria hiking end of June. Will be landing in Sofia and renting a car so hoping to hit a number of the national parks, got some ideas from here but open to further suggestions. Also any good Bulgarian food to try?

  • I’ve a week in the Cairngorms in May/June, staying at Braemar.

Any recommendations or tips on hikes? I’ll have a 10 year old with me who’s capable of distance and height (Lomond/ Snowdon type stuff or Suillven last year for example), but I’d avoid anything technical.

  • Lochnagar circuit via Loch Muick would be my choice, great walk. You don't have to do all the Munros on the route, can bypass and come back down via the waterfalls if weather is bad, or fancy making it shorter

  • Cool thanks - that was on my list of possibles so good to have a recommendation.

  • You've got quite a lot pretty near to you from Braemar. Another big day would be start at the Linn of Dee, walk to the old Derry Lodge, cross the Luibeg Burn and head into the Gorms, from there you could do Càrn a'Mhaim, which has a nice easy ridge walk on the descent, then ascend Ben Macdui.

If you wanted to do a two dayer you could just hike to Courror Bothy, stay overnight and next day do either the two above, or do the Devils Point with the option to carry on to Stob Coire an t-Saighdeir and Sgòr an Lochain Uaine (The Angels Peak).

Probably you'd want to to leave the Devils Point to last with those three, and come back down the way you came up, back to the Bothy and then walk out.

Whatever you do don't descend from Devils Point via Glen Geusachan, it's a total bogfest nightmare!

  • If you can get a lift up to Derry Lodge (or cycle), you could get into the Lairig Ghru, nip into the corrour bothy for a tea, up the devils point and even return via glen dee if you fancied a longer day.

You could also head up glen derry towards the lairig an Laoigh/hutchinson hut and bag a peak(s) on the way/way back.

  • Lairig Ghru

Or park at the Sugarbowl and get into the LG via the Chalamain Gap

And yeah, cycling to Derry Lodge is preferred. It's a 4 mile trudge. Nice scenery, but still a trudge

  • Ha, we must have been typing those in parallel! I imagine lochnagar might be a bit quieter than LG options, though I’ve only approached it from the east before.

And yeah, loads of bikes shoved into the heather around derry lodge with a lock thrown on when I was there last year.

  • Last time I did it on my old carbon road bike. Was doable but not really something I'd repeat 😆

  • I'm part of a community group trying to set up a small pilot climbing gym with the hope of a part council funded facility being in the pipework. Does anyone have any experience of this?
    Specifically with regards legals/liabilities?

  • Morning hike and fly to / from Col des Frêtes. Don’t trust people who tell you it’s a two hours walk up! Great, great flight though.

  • Senor Bear, @Chopsicle, @jonheslop and I rode up the Col des Fretes in 2016. I remember people running off of this platform and yeeting themselves into the air and was just gobsmacked.

  • Mega. Looking forward to being able to try again soon.

  • Anyone been up Kilimanjaro?

Mrs Cookie wants to do it. We’ve a 10-year so she may go herself while little cookie and I sit on a sofa and watch tv for 2 weeks

  • A few climbers here so I thought I’d see if anyone wants them.

I’ve got these hexes that I’ll never use and they’ve not sold on ebay, I’ll post them to you at my expense. All I ask in return is that you please make any donation to the cancer charity that got me through my time from diagnosis to cure after you’ve got them. Justgiving link:

Long story short. I had cancer, it was a rather not good time. The Olive Tree Cancer Support Centre helped make it easier. I’ve since heard the phrase, “you’re cured”.

  • Significantly less adventurous than a lot of the stuff in this thread but has anyone got any suggestions for nice walks that are easy to get to on public transport from south east London? (SE20 specifically). Probably about 2-4 hours worth of walking at a not super fast pace and would like some woodlands because despite being Greek, my dog is shit with any sort of heat so some shade would be nice. If there's a nice pub or two en route, even better.

  • Anyone have somewhere for a ~25km loop walk somewhere south of london, where there is campsites around?

Friend going through a rough time and we want to head out early saturday morning (not this weekend so not bank holiday weekend) from Croydon in the car, park up at a campsite, setup camp, walk ~25km in a loop], stay the night, drive home, but i am absolutely clueless

  • Ticks. Watch out for these pesky little parasites when out and about this summer if you're straying off the beaten path. To avoid them, the best advice is wear full length trousers or carry tick tweezers if you insist on shorts. Don't be tempted by any 'burn them' or 'drown them in oil' removal remedies either. Anything like that raises the chance of them vomiting and giving you Lyme disease if they are infected.

I had two last week down in deepest rural Devon and made the mistake of dowsing one in oil as that was what some Italian friends suggested the last time I had one 20 odd years ago (in Italy). The nurse removing it made it perfectly clear I shouldn't have done that.

Edit- will post this in the walking thread

  • I’ve done this route a few times.
    https://www.walkingclub.org.uk/walk/dorking-to-reigate/

I’ve done it in reverse (Reigate > Dorking) and finished at box hill for the sunset. But I imagine it’s nice both ways.

Was a decent Sunday walk, with cheap day returns from London.

The Pubs suggested are all a bit Range Rover, but they’ll do you a pint.

  • You could try looking at some of the London Loop or Capital Ring sections. All designed to be reachable by public transport and usually feature shade/pubs/interesting stuff to look at, etc. I've done all the ones near SE London and can recommend sections 1, 2 and 3 of the Loop and the first four sections of the Capital ring.

  • Soak your clothes/gear in Permethrine, it does seem to help
