  • Yeah, having done a rubber roof on my garden office I'm edging to that but less people who do it vs felt and there's going to be a couple of windows and a couple of pipes (extraction etc ...) exiting the roof so these bits tend to be a bit tricky.

  • Thanks, haven't got a Facebook account so will try and keep that streak for now.

I did however have the first response at last:

"This isn't the sort of thing we do."

Entirety of the email. Not sure if that's more or less helpful than just not responding.

  • My builder uncle

Well, yeah, he's a builder, not a roofer.

  • True, but he's ultimately responsible for honouring the warranties for the roofs that his roofers construct...

  • Presume it was felted because 12 deg is not enough for tiles to function properly.

You might be able to find a special tile designed to function where the pitch is limited.

Worth noting that roofs are only felted / fibreglass / Rubber when tiles cannot be used as simply, they aren't as good.

As with all roofing finishes, they are all only as good as the quality of install. So the question is better phrased as what is the finish my carefully selected trade is most willing to use, and why?

  • Yep that's a good point. I might try to get a roofer to do that bit specifically while the builder gets on with the rest

  • Go rubber, felt doesnt last and you've done well to get 25 years out it that's for sure.

  • non-concealed would compromise our facade (I don't think the architects would ever speak to us again)

Fools. Agree with @Cupcakes - outside where they belong! Celebrate the rain. Heavy downpours will only get more common. As will droughts and external will make it easier to divert to a collection butt...

  • I should point out that I've not discussed it with them yet, but nice uncluttered facades are a bit of a trademark of their work.

However they're very good at what they do (this is why we're using them!) and they've probably worked out a clever yet simple solution which would be typical. What normally happens is I'll research some crazy idea like those flat drainpipes then they'll say that seems unnecessarily complex and we normally just do this simple yet effective solution :)

So I need to raise this with them (along with 101,000 other things) and see what they say, but it's good to know about the issues @Cupcakes / friends of @ectoplasmosis experienced and good point on heavy downpours getting more common, a lot of our neighbours drainpipes already don't cope. Forewarned is forearmed and all that.

  • Sure the Coppermill can arrange that, but what about my gutters?

  • Final touches on bathroom plan this week. Being done in August. Originally started planning to do myself but scope creep is real and now there's plenty of things I can't be fucked to do myself, including but not limited to moving walls and building out a pocket door.

Inspo is essentially this picture for tiles and black fittings.

  • Currently this. Shower walls left and back are going to be pink tiles. Same with back behind bath (swapping to freestanding). Rest is white hexagons.

Removing the towel rail and that corner wall to make the shower area bigger and having heated flooring instead.

  • All in, it's probably £12k which is crazy money for a small en-suite but we use it every day obvs so looking forward to it being much less shit.

  • Having just done a pocket door it was very simple. But if I were you, I'd pay someone to do it and have the free time!

  • Honestly, the amount of time it's taken me to just take down a wall in our bedroom is astounding. With the little one, it's almost impossible to get stuff done. I'll still be doing this in 5 years if I did it myself.

  • Removing the towel rail

How will you dry your towels?

  • ... heated.... wall :-O

  • If you're putting in UFH then you could just leave them on the floor.

It seems to work for my kids.

  • Lol - we are.

We're putting it on the floor and onto one wall which the towels will hang on. Heated wall.

  • Get that in the 40k kitchen thread.

  • I know you have water softener etc but if I were giving some unsolicited thought/advice

    • black taps/showers I like them but they might date and get dirtier with limescale. That said I have them in our shower room so who am I to judge!
    • Those matchstick tiles look great when lined up and plumb as fuck but also worth thinking about grout colour the white in the pictures will get dirtier
    • White floor tiles will show all the dirt - we have large format light concrete and it's a daily whip round with the vacuum to keep it clean.

You just like the hexagon ones? I think getting a really good tiler and seeing their work would be worth it with tight spaces and unusual shape tiles.

ufh in the bathroom is essential, interested about this hot wall...

  • Advice always welcome mate.

Softener does wonders for limescale. Zero on taps in the house after 5 years so pretty confident we’ll be ok. Famous last words.

Definitely doing dark grout in all tiles. Dark grey or black.

I do like the hexagon tiles. We’re going with large ones so hoping to reduce awkward bits. Still, being charged an extra 2.5 days work for them. Open to other recommends but we’re both pretty happy with the choice.

Thought about the white floor. With the pink and the hexagon, not sure if another colour / style would just make it visually messy. Might regret it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • On the subject of softners... do I need one? Or some sort of water filter? Keep getting served that advert from that twat who was on Dragons Den which makes me not want to buy his product, but after something similar, anyone?

  • Fyi Soul earns Amey-levels of referral commish from big water softener so take anything he says with a pinch of salt.

  • I'd love one but was shot down by finance years ago.

    Pros:

    • less soap required to wash your hair
    • less limescale on every-fucking-thing
    • water consuming appliances last longer

    Cons

    • tastes a bit weird
    • cost
    • locating the kit
