  • My bargain Leica iiia has shutter 'capping' woes.

Weighing up sending it for a service which will cost 3x (or more) what I paid for the camera against opening it up and attempting to service the relevant parts myself.

Pretty much every frame exhibits under or non exposure of the right hand side.

It's a bummer it doesn't just work as it should but maybe to be expected and I think even if I end up paying for a service I'd end up with a very sorted camera for below the sort of median ebay/2nd hand camera dealer price.

  • The III series is a popular camera, and there is plenty of stuff on the internet about how to do this yourself, but it may take a bit of digging to find it. There are plenty of leica user groups on Facebook, and a few dedicated to repairing vintage cameras, which are all sources of useful information. This place, https://www.rangefinderforum.com is full of information - too much sometimes.

  • I found a pretty good YouTube vid that showed how to get to the slow speed escapement and the gears and mechanisms under the top plate so I’m going to follow that and see what I can do.

I’m away for the next 5 days so will look into oils and such while I’m away and order in time for them to be delivered soon as I get back and then I can crack into it.
