Drilled a tiny hole in the cover and partially screwed in the smallest screw I could find and it’s still not coming out. It spins very freely though. Weird. Is the next step sacrificing the film in there and removing the bottom plate?

Figured it out. The whole assembly was spinning around. Wedging the tip of a knife between that and the body gave me enough purchase the get the cap off

..would have gotten the film out in a changing bag (or under dark blankets in a dark room / at night) rather than just removing the bottom plate and wasting the film 🙂

My bargain Leica iiia has shutter 'capping' woes.
Weighing up sending it for a service which will cost 3x (or more) what I paid for the camera against opening it up and attempting to service the relevant parts myself.
Pretty much every frame exhibits under or non exposure of the right hand side.
It's a bummer it doesn't just work as it should but maybe to be expected and I think even if I end up paying for a service I'd end up with a very sorted camera for below the sort of median ebay/2nd hand camera dealer price.

The III series is a popular camera, and there is plenty of stuff on the internet about how to do this yourself, but it may take a bit of digging to find it. There are plenty of leica user groups on Facebook, and a few dedicated to repairing vintage cameras, which are all sources of useful information. This place, https://www.rangefinderforum.com is full of information - too much sometimes.

I found a pretty good YouTube vid that showed how to get to the slow speed escapement and the gears and mechanisms under the top plate so I’m going to follow that and see what I can do.
I’m away for the next 5 days so will look into oils and such while I’m away and order in time for them to be delivered soon as I get back and then I can crack into it.

Hi, I've recently experimented with x-ray film and a single exposure back for the Mamiya C330. I've used a film made for mammographies, and these have a single-sided emulsion layer, unlike x-ray film for general use which is double sided, as far as I know (and consequently not as sharp unless the emulsion is removed from one side). Details are: Mamiya C330, single exposure back, Mamiya-Sekor 80mm, paramender, Fujifilm UM-MA @ ISO 64, D76H 1:4 24ºC, development timed by observation under safe light. Scanned with a DSLR.

Thanks a lot. They were all taken on a tripod - but the leaf photo was at at f8, the dog and the bike were at f2.8 to try and soften the background a bit (worked better with the dog, because he was closer to me). Here's another sharp one taken at f8 of a wooden ball.
Cheers,

I contacted two places re doing a shutter service on my iiia.
1st place - we’ll only do a full service (£240+) and we have a 5 month turnaround.
2nd place - we don’t touch Leica.
That’ll be me servicing it myself then.

There's a list (sticky thread) of repair specialists on the "Leica Collectors & History" forum of the Leica Forum site. That forum is a good place to ask specific questions on the older Leicas too.

I've done some servicing on barnack leicas and it's not so hard*, plus as mentioned there's a lot of information out there. I'm sure you'll be fine.
*admittedly I've never opened one with a slow shutter mechanism which does change things, they're still not too complicated tho
This reminds me I also need to fix the shutter on my leica i... I really miss having it

The smiley face one is so perfect. Colour mirrored in the train, the contrasting red bollards and that poster with the woman’s face. It all looks so deliberate and not at the same time.

Can you pop a bit of bluetax on end of screwdriver to apply a bit of 'pull' as you unwind so it comes out?
