  • Can myog one with vaseline tin and "fire rope", comments worth a read.

Switching focus now before I buy all the things.

  • Why doesn't anyone make a titanium Trangia copy with a lid like an actual Trangia? Is adding threaded tops to ti really hard or expensive or something?

  • Don't know if any of you follow Stripey Hat Guy on YouTube but he's got a Ti cone/stove Kickstarter on the go. His own version of the Storming Norman cone looks like (plus stove)

  • That looks neat. Though there was another UK website selling kinda homemade looking ultralight stoves - anyone remember what it was?

It wasn't this mob, but this looks similar to the kickstarter one

  • Could well have been. They seem to have fewer options on the site now though.

I'm sure the one I'm thinking of had different sizes, different colours maybe and you could get them filled with different "wick" material like carbon mesh or something.

  • The caldera cone system was the first. It's been through several iterations, and several distributors - it's the nature of small, handmade specialist items. In its purest form it's set up exactly so that the hottest part of your flame has the best contact with your cooking pot. That's why they want to know which stove and pot combination you are using.

I'm more than happy with my epigas alpine system, but if I was doing it again I'd either use camping gas - available everywhere, or a meths stove.

Finally, if you go down the meths stove route, the bushcraft guys worked out that pure alcohol (IDA?) burns hotter. Unfortunately you need an authorisation from HMRC to buy it, and so many of them applied at the same time that the authorities thought something was afoot, and stopped giving out licences. That was several years ago though, and things may have eased up since then.

  • My reason for having an alco stove in addition to the canister stove is simply ease of finding meths and stuff compared to canisters. When I rode in Scotland I couldn't find gas canisters anywhere so having a meths backup stove kicking around would've been nice (same goes for travelling to places without canisters I guess). I'm not that bothered about efficiency or all that jazz because if I was, I'd simply not take any stove (lightest stove is the one you don't carry) and eat cold food, which is much faster than cooking. :)

  • Yes, canisters are the big weakness for gas stoves. If you don't mind, I'd suggest you look closely at the Calder Cone system, because you can just use meths as a main fuel, no need for a backup. When they first became widely available they were very popular with the ultra-light crowd, precisely because you could get fuel anywhere, and they were, well, light.

  • Has anybody tried these, this?

They look like a good idea, but are a bit on the pricey side by the time they’ve landed here for me. I’ve seen some diy versions and they appear to be just as good and easy to make. However I don’t want to bother to makes some if they are crap.
    Thoughts?

  • Another plug for Stripey Hat Guys stove! I've backed it

    https://wildsideadventures.framer.website/

  • Looks nice, I guess slightly more efficient/lightweight than the speedster stoves windscreen + pot stand combination.

  • The flames blow out as easy as birthday candle

    Seems flawed?

  • The burner is same as Des Catty's no?

  • Sorry I didn't get back on this. I couldn't work out the concern, guessing ceramic fibre is bad to be around/ burn this way?

  • Haha it's funny that you mention this now, because it was probably about the same time this morning that I scrolled past the URL I'd added yonks ago in my shopping list and only saw it again this morning. Fucking universe is fucking with me again.

  • I think so pretty much. It's a bit on the pricey side all in but I think he's going to start offering just the cone as well

  • Yea in part it’s whether the material will break down or off-gas. But I was also curious so I could shove a lump in my ultralight alu trangia copy to see how the flame goes.

My genuine trangia kit is still in the same bag probably manky after using last summer. Shows how much use that stuff gets.

  • Haha! Without the windbreak it would be useless I’m sure.

  • Wind breaks are worth their weight penalty for sure. I tried a couple sizes in the garden around alcohol burners and there was a massive drop in boil time for 800ml water.

I found the folding concertina type was worth the hassle

  • This?

  • Maybe? The ones I've seen never have lids. Is there a UK-based seller?

  • I have one like that. Amazon/AliEx special. Weighs very little. Lid will leak. May have Amazon Primed it.
