  • I even left it over night.

It’s more time consuming than you’d think. I was at it for a week or so, changing solution every day, before I finally got the post out. You gotta relax maaan…

  • I took your wise words onboard, went straight back to Robert Dyas doubled up on caustic soda, put a bit more effort in and was finally rewarded this morning. Thank you @russmeyer

  • Well done!

  • Bravo!

    How was the paint?

  • I tried to protect the frame paint with bin bags and fed a short piece of hose pip into the seat tube with a funnel on the end to minimise and spillage. The frame still got covered with caustic soda when pouring out old solution and pouring in new. This dried a thick white colour and I was fearing the worst after it came back post warm water clean but a wipe down with vinegar removed it. Overall I probably didn’t need to worry as much about the paint as only a very small amount was removed where I think a blob of parcially undiluted CS sat on the paint over night. I was making 400ml batches using enough CS until I could feel the heat through the plastic container and marigolds, leaving for a few hours / once over night. I would def use this method again all in prob cost £20 3x 500ml CS, gloves, funnel and no need to respray the frame. 👌

  • I would def use this method again

I've sort of arrived at the conclusion I'm not buying a frame with a stuck seatpost again

  • Yeah totally, it took more time, effort and CS than I had expected! I will think twice before taking the bait of a cheap frame due to stuck post in the future!

  • Not sure what happened there
Here is the same type of jig…
Except when I test the link it doesn’t work. Let’s try YouTube

  • Thanks.

Seen a few of these jigs about and would be interesting to see one in operation in person.

Don't think anyone in London has one though.

  • Got a CrMo bike with a stuck alu seatpost.
More leverage = more better, so I bought a 36" (90 cm) pipe wrench. The seatpost got loose very easily. However, It was a real PITA to set the wrench up so it would hold on properly. I guess the bigger the wrench the bigger the teeth (and the gaps between them), so in retrospect I'd choose a 18" or 24" instead, and add a cheater bar if necessary.

  • Edit: it’s a moot point now as the drive side BB came pre-chewed and is too mangled to extract. One for the rag and bone man

Anyone know what the smart thing to do is when you’ve got a stuck seatpost that’s kinda buggered itself?

Steel frame, aluminium seatpost. Seatpost is proper stuck, some signs of whitish corrosion as you’d expect. Started on the usual process with penetrant but the head of the seatpost itself is spinning, negating any leverage I delicately apply with a hammer. Any smart suggestions before I resort to the fizzy bad?

Bike cost me £20 from some slightly feral local kids so it’s more for the fun of it - frame is rusty but useable if I can get this sorted.
