  • Laura K reporting him as "catty" and "unpleasant" also. If it's coming from her the reality must be way worse.

  • Doesn't Rishi remember this;

He could even have asked Cameron about it,
probably at a military airfield, where their flight schedules coincided.

He may have forgotten about it as he was the Chancellor that stripped its funding.

  • Yellow hammer 1

  • This election is becoming a daily car crash for men in blue suits. Weekend with ugly buggers rather than French film blokes.

  • The concept of national service isn't unpopular....

  • I find that sentiment difficult to believe, or at least believe there's been creativity in questioning / presentation. There's no way more 18-25 year olds would rather serve in the army than not.

Yougov has a poll from 2023 which is much more against the idea. Accept that yougov has the word 'military' in the question, which may be significant.

  • Yes people are less supportive of compulsory military service

  • The problem with PR for Labour is that it will almost certainly lead to the party splitting into two, as both wings will fancy their chances of being electorally successful on their own.

I think there’s a lot of constitutional reform Labour should push through, including making the electoral system more democratic, but I don’t hold out much hope for it to happen.

  • Not really a problem, the Tortures (autocorrect, but I like it so not fixing) have more wings than a Bargain Bucket now, so would totally shatter.

  • This national service farce is as mad as the Truss fiasco. C4News is quite rightly leading with it but the Guardian is very quiet. Weird.

  • Read John Crace’s column!

  • Good job he has been locked away all day brainstorming

Exclusive: Rishi Sunak is considering requiring future applicants for public sector jobs to have completed National Service

It’s one of the enforcement options that would go to the Royal Commission for consideration if he gets to enact the policy

  • But that could apply to teachers too?

  • What the actual fuck

  • I'll try to find it. I'm happy to say the Guardian's lead headline is now a NatServ story with 'Bonkers' in it!

  • This would decimate the public sector. Typical Tory policy.

  • We had our (Britain)first election door drop yesterday, this is just the sort of place where people might vote for reform rather that the Tory so more power to them.

Current polling suggest the Lib Dem’s have the best chance here

  • What's more concerning is that you keep bananas under your carpet.

  • It's a cunning tactic to avoid TheBonk.

  • I am enjoying that rather than rowing back or saying its work in progress, they are doubling down with more and more ludicrous details

Parents could potentially be fined for their 18-year-olds not participating in National Service

  • 18 year old is an adult though.

  • I thought they started to reel back on it yesterday(no prison, not mandatory, not necessarily military), but maybe they've changed their minds overnight...

Are they now trying to alienate the adults as well as the children? They're firmly aiming at the grandparent generation? I can't think of anything else where I'd be punished for something my adult children do and it seems an unusual thing to try to sell to people.

  • Maybe the parents deserve to be punished if they didn't do a good job raising a compliant citizen who fancies a gap year in Somalia or weekend litter picking along the canal

  • You don’t need to apologise. If I was 18 today, I would flatly refuse to engage in a community service mandate set by the Tories. I was suggesting whether anyone would in exchange for a university degree.

Also does not mean I would not support my neighbours and neighbourhood as I do already, or provide career advice from my industry in local schools for free.
