And they (Tory strategists, Rentoul of the Independent) think Sunak is a brilliant debater…He is nothing of the sort…thin skinned, tetchy, arrogant, smug and totally out of touch…He ain’t ‘reading the room’.

I think national service is relatively popular in Switzerland and Sweden (although I can't be bothered to look up polls on it).
In the same way that university isn't all about lectures I think it probably could be a good thing for kids who've just left school - but classic Tories, instead of that let's do indentured servitude to punish young people a bit more

Trouble is in most GEs younger people don’t vote.

It’s the same thing again with the conservatives, it’s a punishment.
If they had any sense they’d understand that the carrot is way more persuasive than the stick.

Be a much harder sell in the UK as it was ended here in 1960..whereas it is an ongoing event in most European countries…The Tories are trying to out compete Reform.

Have the Tories announced National Service to try and trigger the shattered synapses of the elderly by aligning with D-Day 80th anniversary events?
-
• #184
They definitely will now. For anyone but the conservative's

• #185
I bloody hope so…tactical vote to get the bastards out!

to resurrect the Combined Cadet Force
Does that not exist anymore? I quite enjoyed being the only pacifist in the air cadets at school because we got to go and fly planes over Belfast.

But not mention that the Normandy landings was really an American show and the last hurrah for the British as a minor actor …As it weren’t the Brits that won the war!

Tories aligning with European policies, nice.

It would be 1000x better to offer a job guarantee to everyone, not just kids, with various formal pathways for local environmental protection alongside other more normal work-related schemes (mentorships/internships/small business or co-op incubators).
Rather than actually trying to make various parts of society good, conservatives love ideas that force others to do menial work.

The idea that states should be forcing people into a specific quid pro quo is quite a draconian notion.
I wasn’t saying it should be compulsory.
If you are faced with £60K student debt after three years, would it not be worth considering a scheme. -
• #191
Of course it would and everyone would take it. It would be such an obvious benefit to wipe out 60k of debt for a few weeks litter picking that it wouldn’t really be a choice.
The government wouldn’t be getting their ‘return on investment’ in the form of future student debt repayments either, so in effect education would be free as long as you kids do what we say
Better to just have free education, surely?

National service in Norway is no longer compulsory. However young cadets are drafted into civil engineering projects across the country such as maintaining sea defences, obtaining practical skills, learning life skills, building character.. before starting university education.
Back to the UK my step daughter is pursuing medical school through the Army, after her A levels. She wants to be a surgeon no way she could finance her education independently

I would have hoped only in the more reactionary public schools.
Gove was trying to mainstream it, probably to bolster the number that would be attracted to a non-Officer military life. -

Who picks our fruit and veg.. who are the porters in the NHS? Who is taking care of the elderly. There are a ton of jobs that need to be done..

• #197
Doesn't Rishi remember this;
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Citizen_ServiceHe could even have asked Cameron about it,
probably at a military airfield, where their flight schedules coincided. -

My son is a NHS porter!

It definitely exists in some form at one of the local schools we just took our 10yo of a tour for.

Free at the point of use.....
The Tories really do have it in for younger people don't they.
