Obviously, that particular novelty Seiko is a lame joke. But in general I am keen on a panda/bicompax watch. What is the Seiko movement used in their bicompax watches?

  • Lame joke is a bit harsh for a design exercise that's meant to be a bit of fun.

Which "bicompax" are you talking about? Their only current two-register chronographs are mechanical and use the automatic 8R46, eg: https://www.seikoboutique.co.uk/product/prospex-speedtimer-1964-chronograph-recreation-srq039j1/

The vintage ones like the jumbo, kakume, bullhead etc used the 6138 movement.

  • Not to hype you up too much but that type really does look proper.

  • +1

But why did they use Ariel for the "Swiss Made" in the subdial?

  • I can't tell if this is a joke or not. But if not, clearly the same type but bold.

  • Paulin Watches have great GMT options

  • If I were to buy a watch, I would give this serious consideration. I wasn't sure when I first saw it, and the name is a turn off, but I think the overall design is wonderful.

    You’re too kind

  • 🙏

Thanks so much. I am guessing that the second VPC watch, if it gets made, will have a broader appeal, it’ll be a diver with a rotating bezel and a central seconds hand, but in basically the same case.

  • I'm going to get this. Excited. Waiting for the UK model.

  • Happy Friday all.

This has made a surprise comeback this week. Don’t even mind the sizing at the moment.

  • Very nice, what is the reference?

  • SRPE55

They’re £195 at Watchnation right now which I think is a nice deal.

    https://www.watchnation.com/product/seiko-5-sports-srpe55k1/

Mine’s also running at about +2s/day at the moment which is faintly ridiculous for a 4R36 (which are rated to -35/+45)

  • Probably can’t wear outside of the house/office…

  • You'll be fine if you don't go boozing in posh areas.

  • Not posh, don’t booze. Should be all good then.

  • If I see watches like this in daily life I assume they're fake.

  • When the organised watch thieves target you, 2 or 3 guys close with you on the pavement and start a conversation about which model you're wearing and ask whether it's a fake. They know the prices. Sometimes there's a girl who has just been eyeballing your watch in a bar.

I wear gold fakes around Brixton and this sort of happened to me but it was only one tiny guy. His m.o. was not machete and arm lock, it was be friendly and ask for a look.

  • All jokes aside, I wouldn’t wear on a night out. Sad state of affairs, but it is what it is. Had a pretty sus experience when wearing this, which i assumed would be very low key.

  • Very good-looking and not low key to my eye. The minute markers, the logo and the proportions of the dial shout Rolex from across a room. Their brand identity and awareness are as strong as the top consumer brands and they do a great job of keeping it that way. I think it helps that the logo usually has space to assert itself without a clutter of subdials. They also have a policy not to use anti-reflective crystals. They surveyed American customers, who preferred their Rolex to be noticeable, even at the expense of legibility.

  • You are right. I could spot a Rolex from across a room so it is fair to assume that a person who is out to steal one would also. I now wear this Zenith on nights out as it is a lovely watch, but unlikely to get anybody excited.

  • Rare Omega 1/100 second Stopwatch. The centre hand does a full rotation in 3 seconds, allowing the amazing accuracy, for 1966 !

A friend's father has just passed away, and they have found this watch.

It seems to be rare, as I've only found 1 link to this particular model variant.

The picture is from the web, as it's too hard to upload from my PC, but I can send a "real" pic to anyone who wants one - just PM me.

The family are not horologists, so any ideas on value and the best method of sale would be of help to them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, pointers to where I should look for info would also help.

    Many thanks, Gren

  • That's lovely but Roman numerals will get you a pass from most watch thieves.
