  • People on here found Bromptons not heavy duty? I've had mine just under a year and the folding pedal snapped off and the chains just snapped as well.

This left a big scratch on my frame when the pedal snapped and I keep my bike in really good condition, Brompton initially just offered some touch up paint and a new pedal but then we're decent and sorted the frame out, with a new pedal and a voucher for the £17 I paid for Condor to slap a generic pedal on there so I could get to work.

They did say that the sprockets and chain need replacing when it was returned to me but I've only had it back less that two weeks and the chains just gone. I've already got the parts and was due to swap out this week but ordered the wrong chain length by mistake.

I've never had another bike chain snap on me, I do cycle 4 days a week, but only about 50 miles per week.

  • Start a claim for defective product?

  • Hmm. Can't comment negatively on the folding pedal from a durability perspective. I used mine for many years and miles, in the most in inclement weather - no issues. Maybe newer ones aren't as well made.

The chain is normally (may differ on some models like T-line) a standard SRAM 7-8 speed chain. Can't remember the exact model, but it's a chain I've used on other bikes too (8-speed) and again, never had problems with it. In fact, I once snapped my cogs from a high-gear start, but the chain was fine!

Did yours snap before the shop replaced it?

  • With Bromptons being so much closer to the ground I have found they absolutely eat through the drivechain. Although using an 8 speed chain they rarely snap and I regularly see ones worn well past 1.0 and they’re still holding on.

  • The current one I have, bought new in 2016, had a seat post clamp not tight enough, and I also lost three chainring bolts in a month, causing me to taco the ring one ride. All pretty standard stuff if you read through the internet.
