This is a Bernard Thompson photo taken on one of the 'Bern and Eth' training weekends. I think it dates from the mid seventies. This was before I attempted the ride, but I'm sure if I had been there that year I would have been off the back , and probably further back than the rider who can be seen struggling in the background. The place is just over the top of Rockingham Hill (pretty brutal) about seven eight miles from the start of the return trip.
Yes, that is sleet, not dirt on the lens - it's late February and before global warming became noticeable. Note the heavy 27" pressures, also, although you can't see it, they are on single gears.
I like this because, while racing pics are everywhere, training is less well documented
