  • external rim width

External only matters if you're refining your aeros, the tyre carcase cares about the internal width.

A 28mm tyre will work equally well on either of those rims, so pick the one which will suit your option tyre - are you going to run a 25 up front for time trials, or a 40 for gravel bashing?

  • Thanks @gbj_tester
No gravel bashing on these wheels or TTs for that matter, just riding around fast. The frame is a super six evo hi mod which Cannondale originally supply with 21mm int and 32mm ext Hollowgram R-SL 50 wheels. All being even which rim is better or are they for all intents and purposes the same? The difference in internal is 21 vs 25mm on the two LB rims I mentioned.

  • are they for all intents and purposes the same?

They are not made for the same intents or purposes 🙂
25mm rim is well above the recommended size from Conti who stick to the ETRTO table and suggest a maximum 19 internal for the 28 tyre, so there's that. You're not going to be using bigger tyres on a SuperSix, so stick to the narrower rim.

  • Ha, knew you'd say that.

It's the new himod which can apparently handle up to 35mm. That being said I can't imagine ever running anything bigger than 30mm tyres on it but then once upon a time I couldn't imagine riding anything wider than 19mm!

The LB WR 40 rims are 25int/32mm ext so 4mm wider internally than the Cannondale wheels which are 21mm... that't the problem is it? The AR series are 21 internal/28 external

  • 4mm wider internally than the Cannondale wheels which are 21mm... that't the problem is it?

Yeah, 25mm internal is pretty spicy for 28mm tyres. I'd run one on the back, but not up front.

It's the new himod which can apparently handle up to 35mm

34mm measured width according to the manual. A 28C GP5000 on a 21mm rim should be 30mm wide

  • Don't even mention external, it has no bearing on your question. As tester says, choose your range of tire width and use the recommended rim. Later on when you change your mind get the wider one.

  • WR40's handle like a dream with 28c tyres.
    Or 30c.

    Ignore the haters😅

As long as you are getting hooked rims there is no concern.

  • Anyone know of any 12 x 100mm non disc front hubs?

Could do a Hope RS4 plus adapters but looking to see if there's any other options out there.

  • Trials hubs maybe?- also seem to remember Bitex doing a through axle touring hub (no disc mounts)

  • Good shouts, have had a quick look and the Bitex seems to be 9, 15 or 20mm, no 12mm option which I thought was strange but then realised, isn't 12mm more of a rear thing?

Trials hubs that I've found are proprietary hubs to go with forks so like, 104mm or a strange 9mm skewer thing!

    It's never easy!

  • Yeah some weird trials ones knocking about.

    Think this one’s ok?

  • Just reposting here from the mechanic + fixing thread to cover all bases.

I have a wheel built up on a Bitex RAR12 that has developed some lateral play, ~2-3 mm up near the brake bridge. I looked at all the bearings and they seem to be fine - spin smoothly - and the axle/ends caps are done up tightly. Anything else to look at? Is it likely the bearings are gone but I can only feel the wear when it's exaggerated out at the rim?

    Thanks!

  • Spokes tight?

  • Yeah all seem to be, the play feels more like a 'clunk' from side to side, which makes me think it is more likely hub than spoke flex

  • It most likely is your bearings crapping out.
There is an issue with these hubs where the large hub body bearing walks out of the bore. You might have to glue it in to fix the play.

  • Ah ok, that's disappointing but valuable news.
Fix it in place with something like Loctite 641? Would you say it might be sensible to replace the bearing at the same time?
    Thanks for the help!

  • You would have to check how worn is your existing ones. Usually the non drive bearing goes first , it's super tiny .

    Either 641 or 638.

  • where could I get a 24h asymmetric Kinlin XR26T in silver? Or symmetric if not possible

  • @cycleclinic is probably your best bet.

  • No luck there unfortunately. Any other ideas?

  • Needing a new fixed gear wheel so looking for hub recomendations, also is Kinlin still the best option for a tubeless rim? Thanks

  • If you are after a rim or a hub I have a lot of stock I'm liquidating at the moment. Lots of kinlins, rim, disc, some hubs too.

  • thanks, have pmed

  • asked in the any question answered thread, but might be more relevant here:
Would anyone have a recommendation for a good silver tubeless ready rim in 650B with an inner width of 20-25mm (for 47 wide tire)?
So far only thought about Pacenti Brevet (I think they are tubeless ready from memory) but any other good option?
