Recommend me a podcast

Really enjoying Custer's Last Stand on The Rest is History. The last few episodes though, you think this one will be the last but then there's another one.

Slightly mixed feelings of wanting to hear more but also wanting to hear the end.

I've become slightly obsessed with history podcasts lately. Was never taught it in in school and had zero interest as a young man but somehow i seem to have slipped into being absolutely fascinated. There is a slight downside to this newfound zeal, which is that I used to be able to rely on a dry history lecture from In Our Time or BBC History Extra or The Ancients to send me of to sleep when I was awake at 3am with headspinnig work anxiety. Now I just lie there and listen in rapt attention rather than swicth off and get some kip. Hey ho.

Not history, and I'm sure this one has come up before but I only recently got hipped to : If Books Could Kill. They seem to bracnhed out into oding news stories now too. Have onlylistened to a couple but they've really tickled me.

Recommend me a podcast player please. All I want is something to replace Google podcasts, so simply show the feed of my subscriptions chronologically and a small bit of info on each show. Basically just do the same Google podcasts now.

After going through a fair number of them I settled on Podcast Addict. It's much more customisable than I need but that does mean it's easy to set up as you want.

I kind of enjoy behind the bastards as a concept but the presenters are ghastly to the point where I begin to sympathise with the Bastards.

Is that deliberate?

For anyone with an interest in history and cricket, Tom Holland (The Rest Is History) is doing one with Surrey CCC called Tales from The Oval, exploring the history of not only the ground but the Kennington/Vauxhall areas

My bias is obvious, but yeah

I used to live in that block of flats with the communal terrace overlooking the Oval pitch. £1500pcm in 2011 for a tiny one-bed with only window in the entire flat. The bedroom "window" was just a door that opened onto a 1.5m sq garden with no direct sunlight, the occasional dead rat and the smell of gas. The flat was riddled with black mould and mice and the landlord was a total bastard - all worth it for two summers of free cricket and rooftop barbecue tho!

Continuing my catch-up of If Books Could Kill, I nearkly cheered and punched the air during the utter takedown of Freakonomics and various Gladwell guff yesterday. It's great when you find something that clearly articulates and justifies the gnawing sense of unease and irritation you have long felt round these goons but haven't had the time or energy to follow-up on.

Lael Wilcox's daily podcasts, as she rides around the world, are worth a listen.

Inspiring and uplifting to hear of all the locals greeting her, to say the least.

Hot money from Pushkin is good if you like knowing about money in porn and drugs.

This is fucked great. Fascinating.

I remember reading Reefer Madness - which looks at 3 sub-economies including porn. It was also incredibly interesting how back then essentially an incredibly small number of people caused seismic change.

Yeah the porn one is excellent. I'm less interested in gangsters. but it's still well done.

Topical given the D-Day celebrations but I just started listening to these after a recommendation from a mate. A very good, easy listen and in bitesize 30 minute episodes. Available on BBC app or via Apple podcasts etc.

Can't remember who suggested underworld. But I find this the most infuriating podcast as I just can't get on with there way of presenting it which is really annoying as the subject and the info they get is wonderful. And when they have a guest on they have a voice that will grate on me and I have to turn it off. Such a shame I can't warm to it as it has so much. I need a change of ears

Edit. So I've given underworld another chance. Think I just chose a couple of bad eps as just given a it another go and was v good.

An absolutely fascinating story. The parallels with incels, school shooters, modern terrorists etc. are striking.
