The mileage isn't crazy but there's a lot of intensity alright. I stuck to the plan pretty religiously but changed one thing. No Saturday workouts. So I just ran 45 mins easy every Sat. I really enjoyed the plan it's a lot different to marathon training (which is my only other experience of sticking to a set running plan)

First time on the track for 2.5 years on Saturday, for the Southern Athletics League, Div 2. 16:31 in the 5,000m, was hoping for something a bit quicker than 5 seconds inside my last parkrun time, but running on the track is such a head-fcuk! Also got involved in an actual race and thought I did well there; my club mate eased away from me about 2/3 laps in (finishing in 16:11) and it felt too hard to go with him. Spent the rest of the race catching a couple of runners, sitting on them, being past by another guy, then sitting on him, then getting ahead and not being passed again. The final-lap gurn-fest was worth the effort because a couple of the young'uns behind me closed to within two seconds at the finish. Phew! What with it being early season, it's good enough for 2nd on the V50 rankings. Feel like I wanna give it another go though.
Calves were toast for a couple of days from wearing non-cheat spikes on the track. Almost feels like justification for splurging on some Dragonflies (anyone??) for my birthday.

Is weekly racing detrimental to progress in a training plan?
As mentioned above im working on improving on my 5k time from its current ~19:15, and have set out an 8 week plan based loosely on:
Monday: off
Tuesday: speed workout
Wednesday: easy
Thursday: off/swim
Friday: off/easy bike
Saturday: Parkrun with toddler in buggy or tempo run
Sunday: long runHowever, local club have announced summer 5k series, 4 races starting Monday and I’d like to do these, but will it be detrimental to progress? I also need to keep Parkrun with the toddler in as much as possible to keep some calm in the house. I’m thinking:
Monday: race
Tuesday: easy
Wednesday: speed workout
Thursday: off/swim
Friday: long run (90 mins max)
Saturday: Parkrun with toddler (easy) or easy run
Sunday: off -

Alternate full gas vs tempo race weeks? What's at stake?
Fwiw Club should be considering load on all it's runners who.might be tempted into going full gas 4 weeks consecutive and spread the series out more imo.
Also, ditch Weds speed session after a Mon race.

I have noticed that on harder efforts there has been rubbing and on the verge of getting a blister on the side of my big toes, despite really tightening-up the laces . This suggests my feet are narrower than I first thought, so would like to experiment with some second hand shoes.
What recent models/brands (non-stability, minimum of 4mm drop) are considered good for narrow/low volume feet?

Nothing at stake other than local reputation/ego.
Club is only starting out, and this is likely an attempt at garnering interest in running locally/fundraising to finish building the track.
I’d like to say yes to alternating between tempo and full gas, but I’m not sure I could talk myself into dialling back when the race starts and people go up the road. If everything else those weeks was easy, would it still be too hard on the body?

A weekly full-gas 5k effort is OK, but I would definitely ditch the Wednesday speed session (or make it a mid-week medium-length but easy pace effort), and maybe even consider how you approach parkrun if you want to give it some beans a couple of days afterwards.

I’m replying late to this but.. I really rate my Garmin forerunner 45s ..
It’s the smaller version and has everything i need without being too bulky.
Wrist HRM which seems decent (connects to a chest based also if you need) .. once the screens are set up the display is clear and uncluttered.
I have distance, current pace and average pace on main screen when running..
Heart Rate, Time of day and time elapsed on second screen.Usual caveats that you need to use the Garmin connect app to get things set up and that’s not perfect.
Battery charges quick and I had no issues >5 hours running with GPS etc. a better charger cable interface than my previous Garmins.
Generally accurate with distances and locations etc.

+1 for the 45s here too. Picked one up fairly cheap a couple of years ago on eBay and it's been a total workhorse!

Steroid injection update:
First run in 6 weeks and 1 day and it felt good. My ankle anyway. I felt terrible -

Thanks for that, useful feedback - my mate's been promoting the Solar Instinct, but that appears to be way more functionality than we would use, and, as I need two, an unnecessary expense. I'd ideally be wanting something with 12+hrs battery life, but that's because I have an intention to do ultras again which is completely unrealistic given my age and injury record.

What running belts are you guys using? What do you look for in a running belt?
-
• #30490
Flipbelt for me

A Vest.
Decathlon öné tó be precíse

I prefer the Decathlon shorts with the zip pouch at the back over a belt or vest but then on long runs or marathons will just run with a bottle in hand as well.

Underarmour Lycra shorts with pockets on the thighs and liner less shorts for me, but I used a flip belt for extra gel storage on the only marathon I’ve ran, and still use it with the one pair of lined shorts I own to carry my phone and keys

Ronhill or decathlon (or both if carrying a few bits)
I've got all the bits for a MYOG one too though and it might be a rainy bank holiday project.

Big thanks to @duncs for the new cheat spikes (Dragonfly). Crikey, either my Garmin's doing a funny one (but it's usually pretty reliable on Charlton parkrun) or I'm fitter than I thought, or these shoes are worth a bit of pace. 16:18 for a 5k time-trial on the grass round Charlton Park. Shoes felt great. Need to find me another 5,000m race again soon.

Three weeks out from my first 50k mountain "race" and I've started feeling a bit of ankle discomfort. Stretch the shit out of it, slow weighted / eccentric calf raises and hope for the best?

On grass! That's seriously impressive. I mean, impressive either way but for a grass TT that's insane.

I have had a first go at the above myog this weekend, my sewing isn't neat & there are a few mistakes (e.g. one of the pleats isn't right, meaning it is a bit lop sided) but it has been a fun (and quite forgiving) learning project.
Next version I will use the proper materials and I might add in a few mods like a couple of gel carry loops to the belt part.

Rapid!
If I look back to eg a 2010 race the results list is incomplete but it has my result attached to my profile. Which makes me think ... Did you try adding the result to your profile via the 'add performance' link? Unconfirmed what might happen but it might prompt it to find it in the archives.
EDIT: catch is I think you need to know your time to add a performance? which creates a circular problem!
