  • Looks very nice! What headset did you use there?

  • Thanks! The headset is from Aliexpress. I've had a few of these and othen than rather rapidly fading colour, they seem fine.

  • I think the Cervelo is now as close to finished it's likely to get anytime soon. Bit of extra in the steerer tube still, I'll cut it once I find the missing headset cover or make another one fit.

  • I thought I'd post a brief update on the commuters, altough to be honest this summer I've ridden maybe half of my rides on the GZR Cargo bike.

    Anyway, Kona Dew Plus:

The setup is nearly perfect, I can't stand the non-indexed thumbie though, I'll probably get a cheap Alivio shifter to replace this. Also, the rattling Hamax is incredibly annoying.

Annual picture of the Pelago San Sebastian. This bike has been close enough to perfect from the start, note to self: change the tires soon.

  • Some may say "Why would you need two commuters?"

    If only they knew

  • Why make compromises when you don't have to, it's nice to have the perfect bike for each day. I also realised I hadn't posted this one here yet. The bike I actually often end up riding, a GZR On-E Cargo (or something like that), Bafang equipped, Bullit-inspired bike.

I bought this one in a somewhat non-functional condition in the summer and managed to fix it. A very fun bike to ride but definitely more prone to steering wobble than other cargo bikes I've ridden, I might splurge on the fancy Cane Creek headset to reduce the issue.

  • It's been an interesting week, after few days of sunshine the winter decided to come back. I took a bit of a fall with the Kona Dew and reshaped the front rack.

With the Kona out, I commuted rest of the week with my cargo bike, which luckily enabled picking up a new bike in the middle of a blizzard on Friday.

The new arrival is a Fausto Coppi Aluminium K3 made of Columbus FOR3, as described my mr. Pelizzoli "old kind of tubes from COLUMBUS called FOR3 with triangle shaped used form the TEAM COPPI pro during the 90s, triangle tubes come out the Colubus - Professional - Giovanni collaboration, to find the most stiffness during the ride on aluminum frames." Apparently rest of the tubesets ended up with Pelizzoli for Leggenda FOR3 frames. Sadly on this frame the seat tube has cracked and been welded, let's see how it holds up.

Bike is built up with Ultegra groupset + Dura-Ace chainset, wheels have Ultegra hubs laced to Mavic CXP30 rims. I like commuting on cheap road bikes and messaged the seller pretty quickly after seeing the add. The bike was quite dusty but after a quick clean it turned out pretty nice. With a longer seatpost, stem and some SPD's should be a good commuter.

  • A rack custom made for the exact Pelago fork I have on my Kona was posted for sale near me. It's a bit smaller than what I had in mind/what I'm used to, but should be good for now.

  • nice

  • Some non-bike content for a change: This for me has been kind of a long-term project, a Fender Telecaster Deluxe. Budget project with secondhand stuff and learning as I go along. Body is a MiM Fender, neck off a Vintage telecaster and I have some active EMG pickups for the guitar. I've been collecting the parts during the past 6 months and I'm still missing the bridge, saddle and string tree. I'll also have to repair the screw threads of the neck either by plugging or with some threaded inserts.

I have to admit that I'm not much of a player, but I like building stuff and especially being able to turn somewhat broken/well-used parts into something usable is a good feeling.

  • Based on Flickr timestamps I've had this bike already for ~4,5 years, definitely one of the bikes I don't see myself selling. The project is in a stage of very slowly taking out the extremely minor nuisances.

  • this is so cool

  • I like building stuff and especially being able to turn somewhat broken/well-used parts into something usable is a good feeling

    This.

Also, super nice collection of bikes as usual. Love the kid bike, I missed that somehow. And the guitar project!

  • Thanks, the kid bike has seen a lot of use and I really should start working on a 16" bike for the offspring.

Fausto Coppi is now somewhat finished, altough I should probably change the 53t chainring to a bit smaller one.

  • Woof woof. Great result! Where'd you get that lairy bartape?

  • Thanks! I've had the bar tape for a while waiting for the right bike, but I have a strong suspicion it's from Aliexpress.

  • Next in line: a mountain bike. A Last Fastforward v1, this one will likely wait quite some time for a final build, but I should have a chance + suitable weather next week to paint it. The colors I'm considering are metallic pink, matte purple or rust effect brown, what should I go for? I'm aiming for a good 20 feet paint job.

  • HI, I really enjoy your thread, some lovely builds here and you do seem to have an endless stream of varied and interesting projects. Love the photos too. Some great winter shots in particular.
How many bikes do you actually have?

  • Wtf is that chainstay protector? Designed by HR Giger?

  • Thanks! Complete bikes... around 12 I think, I count frames as single bike parts (comparable to a chain, a spoke nipple etc.).

  • Apparently yes, and sponsored by Gorilla tape. It's going to be fun to remove and clean.

  • I started to prepare the frame for paint today.

All screws got loose with a satisfying click and a small cloud of dust. I had to drill out one screw which was surprisingly easy, I do have to remember to tap the thread still.

I placed the hardware so that there's a high likelyhood of finding most parts.

I sanded the easy bits. I have a long roll of sand paper originally ment for a belt sander, it's pretty handy for sanding tubes. For the rest, mostly the tube joints + remains of the chainstay protector, I'll have to use power tools.

The frame has been painted with a brush so the layer of paint is extremely thick. Depending on how well I manage/care to do the base, I have a few options for the paint:

    1. Saab Midnight Blue + clearcoat
    2. Light blue almost resembling VW Meerblau + matte clearcoat
    3. "rust effect" brown spray paint.
  • Great bikes and another fun project!

  • I really like the look of Meerblau!

  • Sadly, when havin a closer look at the state of the frame it became instantly clear that anything nice is out of the question. I didn't really want to put the effort into removing the thick layer of paint that didn't really want to come off, especially with the understanding that the spray painted surface wouldn't probably last as well. So... rust effect it is.

I had some clothes drying outside, so had to paint this on the side of the yard that's as dusty as Arrakis. I was very surprised to see I didn't really manage to catch too much sand, insects and other representatives of flora and fauna under the paint.

I think I will warm up to the paint job eventually, it doesn't really hide the craterlike minor imperfections under the surface, but with a nicer paint on, surface looking like surface of the moon would really bother me.

I think I also just scored a deal on a XT M8100 1x12 drivetrain and SLX M7100 brakes for the bike. Frame uses a 12x135 mm thru axle, next I should figure out the rear hub/wheels and probably start keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a used fork.
