I'm not sure you'll find cheap and cheerful in the Lakes in August, but I have been going to Eskdale regularly for many years now and I love it, much quieter, far fewer tourists, stunning scenery and some great pubs. Some lovely campsites around there, and YHA too, but in school holidays have no idea if there will be any availability at this point.

Want to go down to the lakes and cycle around, with the main goal to try Hardknott and see how impossible it is for a recreational rider. Will be in August so it'd be a terrible time for booking accommodations; any place cheap and cheerful (currently considering around the Eskdale region so we can cycle there from Ravenglass but open to anywhere really!) people can recommend?
