I didn't think you could put a roof rack on a 911, is it a special custom one?

No- I think there must have been one engineer in the design team for the 9X6 platform who did some sort of sport that involved a board/bike/skiis/sikilar and also liked cabriolets- both the 986 Boxster and the 996 911 have a Roof Transport System for the soft top models
