One point made by Phil O'Connor was that helmets and sunglasses are terrible from the photographer's point of view - could this be the reason this thread has been dormant for the past thirteen years?

No idea if it's affected the thread, but he's certainly right that everyone looks essentially the same in a peloton (never mind different makes of helmets or sunglasses), and unless you have intimate knowledge of teams, start numbers, or jersey designs, it's hard to identify anyone. You only have to look at the mileage (in describing legendary rides or panache or whatever) that people still get out of grimaces or other expressions in old cycling photographs to see what's been lost.

Favourite Photos

Well, we have to resist the natural temptation to consider pics of ourselves as 'favourite'. After that it may well be pictures of people we know and have ridden with (more in next post), but here is a photo I keep coming back to, even though I have no connection with it.

This is Maurice Diot (leading) and Arthur Muller during their 200 mile break in the 1951 Paris Brest Paris, the last time it was run as a race. They finished in this order.

There's a lot to be said about this edition of the race, but I'll restrain myself for the moment.

Club Mates

This is a Bernard Thompson photo taken on one of the 'Bern and Eth' training weekends. I think it dates from the mid seventies. This was before I attempted the ride, but I'm sure if I had been there that year I would have been off the back , and probably further back than the rider who can be seen struggling in the background. The place is just over the top of Rockingham Hill (pretty brutal) about seven eight miles from the start of the return trip.

Yes, that is sleet, not dirt on the lens - it's late February and before global warming became noticeable. Note the heavy 27" pressures, also, although you can't see it, they are on single gears.

I like this because, while racing pics are everywhere, training is less well documented
