  • that was you?!?! It's so so good, amazing. Possibly only matched by the boneheaded suggestion on that forum they'd just use etap!

  • Um, thanks?

  • I'm just teasing, trying to fit in with the bigger boys. I didn't realise that it was your bike in that video!

  • Cool project - however here’s some thoughts:

    • the connecting plugs for EPS are about 7mm diam, which means at least an 8mm hole (larger probably as you won’t be able to use magnets to guide) at each entry/exit point on the frame. 8mm hole in a skinny steel chainstay 🤔
    • the BB shell will need to house 2 EPS cables. These would be from the battery (seatpost), one to the RD, one going toward the headtube. It might be a squeeze fitting the cables around the cranks axle.
    • EPS cable connections aren’t intended to be outside of the frame, so the stick on Di2 routing option I’d miss unless you are certain the bike won’t ever see a wet wash or rain
    • IMO the best option would be checking with your frame builder to see whether the DS chainstay/BB shell can be replaced/amended to something larger to cater for internal routing. It would be such a nice build if this can be done 🫡

This is some pretty drastically bad news.

    How authoritative is this?

  • Putting the oof into MGOOF.

Custom chrome side pipes and some fancy Campag clamps ftw.

  • For the avoidance of doubt, I am not in the market for tube replacement or even a paint job at the moment.

  • What frame are you planning to use again ?
Could be that you just need to carefully drill some holes and buy some of those small plastic cable entry/exit grommets that you see on modern bikes.
Might have to think about it a bit but i'm sure its doable with a bit of planning

  • It's the Daccordi up there ^^^^^

The pendulum swings back towards drilling.

    Perhaps.

    This is very exciting.

  • Cut the frame at the head tube and bb, pass all the wiring through, re weld. Repaint.
    Done

  • I think we deserve a repost photo of that frame by now. I've been scrolling for days and haven't been able to find it 🙃

  • Haha yes "exciting" is one way of putting it.
It is probably worth weighing up if the frame is worth altering for the modern groupset, or if it not worth just getting something else you wont regret drilling into.
Unless its your forever bike !

  • Fair comment.

Here is the bike with some closeups.

  • Frikin front hub just exploded. Sealed bearings say new hub pls. 😔

    Everyday is a school day.

  • Ouch!

  • Shes a beaut ! A bit rough so i wouldnt be too afraid to touch it, and tubing is what ? Slx or ?

I mean its your choice really the question will always be does the frame deserve such a groupset, and i think only you can decide on that, i would probably gor retro potenza or athena as you already have to get that all silver look.

  • Tommasini Tecno. Mostly Dura Ace 9100 with Rotor X crankset and American Classic wheels. 7.9kgs. Bracing myself for the hate over the stem (it’s not staying like that).

  • Having done something similar I would whip the cranks off and see if a) can you get into the chainstay from inside the bottom bracket, and b) is there a breather hole at the end of the chainstay big enough to get a thin bit of 2-core cable (I used the inside of a headphone cable for that) through: https://www.lfgss.com/comments/14780943/ .

Personally I'd use a Di2 cable sticker on the downtube and not drill that, but if you can get into the chainstay from inside the bottom bracket and out the other end, then a hole underneath the bb won't hurt and there's probably already one there to hold the cable guide on.

  • Five-Hats identifies the only way it would make sense to do this, but it looks like there's no suitable hole at the end of your chainstay, and you would be left with unused shifter bosses and chainstay cable stop, as I pointed out...

If it was me, I'd be on the lookout for a more contemporary Italian frame in ally or carbon, maybe from the brief era where such things had a 1" head tube if you really want to max out the MGOOF factor. An ally or carbon frame would allow you to delete the mechanical shifting gubbins and add an internal wiring loom a lot more feasibly. (Also, it would be a bit of a shame not to run mechanical on a steel frame; the lovely resonance it adds makes a mechanical shift more satisfying than on a plastic bike or most ally ones.)

Extra points for using a 1" threadless fork and going full internal like my TCR.

  • What I would do (and I acknowledge that this is very personal) would be to string the cables for the electronic group set externally where the steel cables for the mechanical group set go.

Run the electronic cable in sheath from the bars to the downtube termination points, then run it under tension (maybe heat shrink it to a steel cable?) to the BB and then onto the relevant mech.

That way you retain the look, it’s a nice technical challenge (very easy for it to look bad, you’ll have to work at it for it to look neat) and if you put enough work into it you will make everyone who knows what they’re looking at do a huge double take.

  • That frame is stunning

  • Is EPS V3 two wires like Di2? It's four, innit.

Bummer... Had a brief thought - you could string a pair of shift cables down the downtube and contrive to make them the actual conductors. Crazy shit.

  • contrive to make them the actual conductors. Crazy shit.

    This had occurred to me.

  • Hang some fukin low voltage fairy lights for le shit

  • POV video in the wheels
