Thanks for the heads-up. Actually took the return trip on the canal path but was in the afternoon on a Sunday so it was nice cycle down; left the path at Markfield Park because I was heading into central London though! Turns out the reason why I didn't enjoy it the first time was the long unpaved stretches, but was a completely different experience with 32mm gravel tires and fixed (:

The canal path has featured in the bike muggings thread a few times, particularly the stretch between Springfield park and Ferry lane. Worth bearing in mind if you're planning a trip on your pride and joy.
