  • I've had an ebay alert set up for ages for a particular pair of cycling shoes and they came up this morning. Bought them straight away, then 10 minutes later the sale is cancelled as the item is already sold. Do some research and the same shoes are listed on vinted (for £100 more).

My first thought was someone has cloned the listing for a low price then is just not going to ship them. But the refund was issued immediately and the seller on ebay has sold bike stuff before, and is in the same city as the vinted seller. So there's a chance it is the same person and they just put the listing price wrong.

However, is this a known scam, and how does it work if so? Do they get paid out by eBay regardless of wether the sale completes so it works like an interest free loan?

  • I would be very careful buying stuff on Vinted, make sure you pay the extra buyer protection and remember you only have 2 days to state any issues with an item once received and then Vinted payout to the seller.

  • yes, Vinted is rife with fakes and duplicated listings. But my surprise was that I bought it on eBay, which is less rife, then the sale was cancelled right away. Seems to be the same seller, so I wondered if there's a known scam where you can sell someone something on ebay, cancel the sale, but still receive the funds, if only for a short period of time?

I know that ebay doesn't pay out until the day after, so that suggests funds from an immediate sale cancellation wouldn't ever reach the seller. but maybe I'm wrong?
