  • I did a masters recently. All the cool young uns used their Ipads and pencils to take notes over the provided pdf slides (or whatever). That seems to be the thing it works well for. Hard to justify £600+ for a bit of fancy note taking tho.

If you are all wondering, I just sat there and listened, sometimes writing something that I never looked at again.

  • I do this when reviewing stuff, am I a cool young un?

  • Yes

  • I get for a lot of folks, they don't really work well, but they must be great for a bunch of folk we are not

    Absolutely.

..would be interesting to see some surveys / see the screen time info what apps / stuff people are using the iPads for.

I bet the majority of people just use it as a "large phone", an expensive gadget for browsing / instagram / facebook etc. on the couch (for which it's great I bet, although personally I'm sure I'd miss a proper keyboard much too often).
I also see a lot of parents putting them in front of their kids on the train etc. so they can watch some shit on it and be quiet.

Given how capable these things are now (processor wise) I guess they're amazing for retouching, digital drawing etc. - but (as above) I bet the people who have this niche use case where they are happy with just the iPad (and don't need keyboard / mouse) to do actual work are an absolute minority..

  • For me, the discrepancy is between how Apple advertises them as a "pro" device, even though the interactions are well below pro standards. Thinking more about it, I think it has more to do with the nature of the device than the OS itself (though it could be vastly improved IMHO)

For a regular user though, who watches tv/films, does a bit of browsing, reads the paper, etc, they're amazing and that's where I think the volume is

  • I bought an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Pencil off someone on here. I sold the keyboard and pencil and replaced them with a second hand Smart Keyboard - much lighter- and a cheap rubber tipped pencil.

I use it for work when traveling and can access full work systems through the Microsoft RD app, or just use Outlook and One Drive apps for most work tasks.

Then out of work for web browsing, YouTube and movies, home admin etc.

I know it’s underused in terms of it’s processing power but it’s super fast and I like the big screen.

I love it and prefer it so much more than my old laptop.

  • Hard to justify £600+

The new 13" iPad Pro with matte screen, keyboard and pencil is £2,400...

  • Modularity though.

If you want something lightweight to watch movies on then an iPad is great. Watching it on a laptop is ok but the keyboard is superfluous.

If you want something to do typing style work on then you need a keyboard attached. Laptop is better for this obviously.

An iPad with a keyboard offers the option for both but with a compromise that is less (for some people) than the compromise of having a non-detachable keyboard on a laptop.

An iPad is generally just less fuss for doing things like watching movies or live streaming TV as a second screen (which is mostly what my iPad does). Playing games on it (mostly what my daughter does with ours) is also a better experience than on a phone screen.

But, generally, they're just extra toys for people who have enough disposable income to be able to buy one. I speak as someone who wouldn't be anywhere near as a productive on an iPad/keyboard as a "proper" setup with separate screen. I'm kind of envious of people who have the type of jobs they could just use an iPad for the vast majority of it, or even just a single laptop.

  • Weights for the new keyboards are currently suspiciously un-unpublished. IMO they need to get under 1kg for the pair (so ~550g margin on the 11" keyboard, ~420g for the 13" keyboard) to rival the portability of the old 12" MacBooks; due to the absence of figures I expect this is not the case.

My current 10"-whatever iPad pro with keyboard is heavier than my 13" air and it annoys me immensely.

  • I’ll probably take my 13” iPad Pro on my long summer break as it’s more flexible than my MBA- despite being basically the same size and weight.

  • Should have caveated… 13” M1 Pro and Smart Keyboard user here for exactly this. I hate holding mine though so it’s hardly ever detached.

I think the above page makes it clear that everyone’s use case is a little bit different…

  • Yes. Where were you when I needed sense talking.

  • Not here, as I would've needed it too

  • Seems Apple got it wrong with the new iPad advertising...

  • If you're not too ham-fisted

Back in lockdown, I had a MacBook Pro which I got the iPad Pro to use as a second screen. It worked for a day and then stopped. The MacBook Pro had spinny wheel and loud fans so I thought I’d order a kit and see if what was inside was causing a problem. It was full of fluff. Stupidly, I put the smallest attachment on the vacuum cleaner to get everything out. It never turned on again. Fucking static.

  • Fuckin hell, that's the price I paid for my M2 MacBook pro Max

  • Suspect mine's full of gunk. Guess manual gunk removal is the way then.

  • It was full of fluff. Stupidly, I put the smallest attachment on the vacuum cleaner to get everything out. It never turned on again. Fucking static.

    Oh fuck.
I did actually pull out the most of the fluff with tweezers and a toothpick - but then also used a vacuum (on super low power, without an attachement but not letting the nozzle touch anything) to clean out the rest 😬

Guess I'll rather get some fancy canned air for the next session 👍

  • Is anyone selling an old Apple Watch? Only needed to play music on runs and track the gps.

Old/a bit beat up is no problem, the cheaper the better.

  • If you get no joy here, try CEX. I bought my last one there - no issues at all with it. Previously I broke 3 accidentally and paid full price each time. Lesson learned

  • Thanks, I’ve bought phones from there before so will check them out for a watch.

Am I right thinking that a series 3 is pretty much useless now? I saw that it no longer receives software updates and have read loads of stories of people not being able to pair them with their phones.

The series 4 is all good though? If it got also got cut off from updates after a year it would be a bummer, anything over 2 years I can live with.

  • I don't know. I have a Series 3 and it's been working fine - famous last words!

  • Thanks, I’ll do some more reading. If I got it from CEX I could always return it if there were any pairing issues.

Also sorry, didn’t realise my previous post was a reply, I didn’t mean for all my questions to be directed at you.

  • No probs. Hope you get sorted.
