I reckon that’s the issue too, but each time I try to reset the pistons and then realign I’m left with the same issue after pumping the brakes a few times. Will leave it tonight and try again tomorrow

Seems like only one piston works?
-
• #8879
One was a bit sticky. I’ve got it cleaned up and is now working better. Not perfect, but better. Do people also lube the pistons a bit? If so, with what?
-
• #8880
A small dab of brake fluid. If you've got a cotton bud, just dip the end of one of those in and carefully apply it to the piston.

Lubing with brake fluid works better with mineral oil, as it's less easily washed off with water. For DOT brakes, I use silicone lubricant (Hunters)

GRX brakes with road levers. Pads are low but not fully worn (1mm left?), but doesn't seem to be self adjusting, lever goes right back to bars before it bites. Is this pads, or needs a bleed?
-
• #8883
Possibly both or seized piston.
New pads are cheap and easy, try that first.

Thanks

Makes sense, will do, thank you.

Are Galfer rotors worth it? I'm building a bike with 12 speed ultegra di2 and it comes with rt-cl800 rotors. Which galfers are best for road use?
-
• #8887
Cheaper, lighter and, I reckon, better looking, what's not to like? I have them on my 12sp UDi2 bike and they work well (although I didn't get rotors with my groupset so maybe an easier decision)
Edit: Centrelock wave. These ones. Although having looked them up, they're quite a bit more £ than they used to be

Say what, that's more expensive than Shimano, no? I've no experience with that brand, but I am using rt-cl800 rotors that also game with an ultegra 12 speed groupsets and I've found them very good so far. Only about 400 km in, mind.

Nice one, cheers
-
• #8890
They're what I recommend to every customer. Not so expensive if you compare to any other quality rotor.
-
• #8891
A lot of people talking about Galfer (again) lately in my cycling circles. What's the hype, and do the road rotors have the same rep as the MTB ones?
-
• #8892
Look good, stops good, light and not too expensive. Road is the same as MTB ones AFAIK. I changed recently my own rotors to Galfer and it definitely stops a lot better, but the old Shimano ones were well abused, so maybe not a very accurate comparison

Thanks. Defo something to consider for future. I have enough rotors to go through now though.

• #8894
Thanks, I’ve got some on order

The cables on my new Shimano MT401 disc brakes are not yet connected but the inserts have been installed already. I'm not going to cut these so glad to have them there already but it looks like there is a clear plug pressed into the insert. There's very little to grab onto but i'm assuming these should be pulled out at install?
-
• #8896
If it's in the barb, it's likely just the plastic film/plug/bung that get's punctured when you install the hose. Pics would help though.
-
• #8897
If it's just the little black bit you can install as is and the fluid pressure will break it, although I've always pierced it apart from once as an experiment where the fluid pressure broke it, but I'm a creature of habit and continued to piece it anyway.

Thanks both, mate passing through had a look and told me the same thing. Will jam it in!

OK, I'm building up my bike in Zagreb station. Never refitted disc calipers before.
they're Shimano grx.
what is the snap ring for? What torque can I put on the bolt or is on without smashing it? -
• #8900
Also front wheel not moving freely. I tried prising the pads apart but don't think it's that...
That caliper doesn't look very central over the rotor, try aligning it and resetting the pistons first?
