That is sad to hear, that shop supplied me some old imperial stuff for old cars and gave great advice with old Raleigh stuff.

Advice wanted please- I'm going to have to buy a car in the coming weeks . It'll be for mostly urban driving . Some medium distance trips and the occasional 200 mile motorway journey. I want something cheap to run and insure , comfy, that doesn't feel too basic inside . Compact to mid size . Probably a hatchback.
Have been weighing up either getting something cheap and older , or something around 3 years old, ex fleet / pcp type cars. Would like to keep budget under £10k. Less is better . Though cost over lifetime of ownership is also a factor .
Any recommendations of models I should be looking at? And whether buying something newer is worthwhile over something older . Thanks

I was going to suggest a Focus too. Be aware though that if that's the 1L ecoboost then the Ford recall might apply to it.

Leon or Fabia are the other obvious ones. But if you're buying something recent a Focus is probably going to be the best value for spec.

This is pretty much what I was looking for and I ended up with a three year old Yaris hybrid for just under £10k. They're fine, not particularly exciting to drive or luxurious but bombproof, cheap to run with a few extras like reversing camera and cruise control.

Don't think you can go too wrong with a Golf.
Just sold one last year that had 185k miles on the clock, and whilst the clutch was probably needing a replacement still felt solid and returned really good MPG.
Ten a penny too, parts are cheap etc etc

I had a mk2 focus years back, definitely fit brief, though it wasnt too efficient around town. Sure more Morden examples would be though. Was a surprisingly fun car too

Nieghbour's son seems to be fixing up a e36 3 series convertible as his first car.
Given how expensive all the other old BMWs are now the e36 is still cheap. This got me thinking what other cool cheap old cars would you look at for your kids first car assuming you could work on it together?
Audi A4 1.8T convertible seem to also be cheap, so that along with similar era Saab convertible are my submissions.
Thinking about something;
- cool
- ULEZ
- safe (no Metros or Novas!)
- cool

I doubt a new driver could afford the insurance on any rag-top car. Except a Morris Minor😁

£1,800 insurance for my daughters Smart car (first car)..... They do some sort of fabric roof jobby I think.
Hate to think of the insurance for a BMW.

E46 is still one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. So good I owned three slowly getting a larger engine every time, M3 obviously steals all thunder.
Fuck knows if they’re ULEZ applicable however apologies.

Holy shit, Fred going isn't a surprise to me, he must have been knocking on a bit, but Paul, that's tragic. I remember him going through the back window of a Volvo estate in a CC Bexley evening 10. Another nice guy, I would never have thought of him as being troubled.
