Does anyone know anything about gardening?

  • Small gardens big plants. Got some Heracleum Lehmanium, and a Ferula Communis as potential fireworks for this year. Cynara Cardunculus is a steady performer in that spot so is all but guaranteed.

  • Does anyone have any strong opinions on tool belts or cargo legwear for gardening? I've found myself recently being annoyed at having to leave my scissors / secateurs / ball of twine on the ground whilst I have other things in my hands. Normal pockets are usual already occupied by phone / keys. I'm not so keen on dungarees as I'm a hot person, but also the idea of a full toolbelt seems a bit OTT.

  • Yes regularly.

I use rose clear on it. Not very often though.

  • Daughter usually looks at Niwaki first.... In the hope dad pays lol

  • That's fantastic. A Fruit Salad rose!

  • Community clothing do one - I looked at it during my browsing for a new apron.
I went for the carhartt apron for cooking but I could see that working well enough for gardening.

  • I've cut holes in enough pockets to swear by tool pouches and belt attachments. Secateur pouch always and belt loop for my silky, other appropriate pouches when necessary

  • Little breakfast sesh.

Nice seeing the early dew covered webs.

  • Great idea, I don't have a sewing machine but I got an old pair of jeans, so will just cut it and use an old shoestring or something to tie it and use the pockets like that :)

  • A stronger fix would be an old belt and then rivet the belt to the jeans.

  • Yeah I didn't bother with proper sewing, works fine

  • I've never had mine that extreme but they tend to start pink and then go to orange.
Are you the person that has the MASSIVE version, from last year?!

I've had only one or two of about the 20 Nectaroscordum siculum bulbs that I planted up, flower this year. I've posted a close-up also!

I have some of these and find them reliably perennial, so don't give up hope yet. Albeit they often lean all over the place at funny angles rather than growing straight up, probably as they're in too much shade.

  • I love these but in my clay soil they don't last very well. Next time I plant some I'm going to put down a load of gravel underneath.

  • More plants for the bog garden arrived. The moss looked like it was dying, but I can see a few green shoots, so long term I think it'll be aok.

    allium schoenoprasum (chives lol)
    Lychnis flos-cuculi 'White Robin'
    Ranunculi
    Preslia Cervina
    Veronica beccabunga
    Anagellis monellii

Also had a late night slug sesh. Should have started this earlier, as I may have underestimated the snail of the problem. Hopefully have saved a few plants. Next year I think I'll invest in neamotoes.

  • Oh that's annoying I thought I took a proper pic of it all planted up.

... Here we go. Looking forward to it developing.

  • How is this staying wet?

  • One of my roses has gone extremely leggy. There was a passion flower behind it that I just took out as it had had its day and I think it was hogging all the nutrients. Once I took it out this started blooming like crazy. Any chance of the lower leaves coming back? Anything I should be doing apart from feeding and watering?

  • All our roses I just pruned back hard and now they’re taking a much better shape, maybe enjoy it for the summer and then do the same? There’s one in our front garden that we basically gave up on, it’s on street view from like 2010 I think, cut it down to nothing and now it’s got some great shoots coming.

  • That sounds like a good plan. We'd a horrible winter so I didn't do the pruning and care that I would normally do. The garden in definitely suffering from that now :(

  • Roses are kicking off here too

  • I used some old plastic pots with the bottoms cut out. Vaseline around the rims and then cover this in salt. Place over the plants and leave a lip of say 4-6inches. I like to think of it as a garden margherita

  • Rain with drainage channels into the area and building up the lawn so it gradually dips towards this area rather than the area to the left. Idk how successful it will be long term. Plus now I've built it I've underestimated how much sun it gets in the evening this time of year.

I'm also hoping the sphagnum moss will take and cover it all to give the visual impression/vibe of a pool of water in the middle. It's meant to hold x20 it's weight in water, so my theory is it will help to reduce evaporation while 'watering' the soil during drier periods.

    We'll see.

Obviously it's less than ideal that I've finally got round to it when the insane rain has stopped and it's getting sunnier.

When planting it up at the moment I've just flooded it.
