It is my understanding from others (when we were trying to find out what exactly has happened to said family members, we had all sorts of conversations about how some of these sects get their claws into people - and then the suggestion "We are supporting X for mayor/sheriff/etc." or stronger at the end of a service = you will vote). I will clarify above.

Yup and (from the experiences with family above), I have been told that their pastors can pretty overtly tell them who to vote for, etc. - from contacts in the US
