It's not just the US (although I agree the extent is a whole different scale) - there are various remote bits of Scotland with similar types. Some close family members moved up there, joined some church and we've not heard a peep from them in years because we are unbelievers... I am half expecting the first we'll hear is some kind of Waco-type siege on the news.

I don’t think the majority of people in the UK realise how religious a very large percentage of Americans are- and how off the deep end some of the sects are.
