  • I don’t think the majority of people in the UK realise how religious a very large percentage of Americans are- and how off the deep end some of the sects are.

  • My parents were going to move to America years ago with my dad's job. They did a trial over there to see if they'd like it before moving.

    The bloke who would have been dad's boss got really shitty because he wouldn't go to church on Sundays.

    He told my dad that his allegiances were :
    1 To his god
    2 To his country
    3 To his family

    We didn't move over there

  • It's not just the US (although I agree the extent is a whole different scale) - there are various remote bits of Scotland with similar types. Some close family members moved up there, joined some church and we've not heard a peep from them in years because we are unbelievers... I am half expecting the first we'll hear is some kind of Waco-type siege on the news.

  • Exactly.

    Always important to remember that many of those who founded what became the USA were religious extremists kicked out of Europe. That's going to shape your country.

    I always found the number of casual, but sincere, references to being thankful to God at work quite disconcerting.
